probability of getting a spade = 13 /52 = 1/4

probability of not getting a spade = 1- 1/4 = 3/4

 Total of 52 cards of which 13 are spades

 P(no spade) = 1 - P(spade) = 1 - 13/52 = 39/52 = 3/4
