Answer: A. Population Parameter

A parameter is something like mu, which represents the population mean, or sigma which is the population standard deviation. A parameter measures something about the population entirely.

A sample statistic estimates the parameter as best as possible. For example, the statistic xbar estimates the parameter mu. Both are means. Another example: the statistic s estimates the parameter sigma. Both are standard deviations.

A hypothesis makes a claim about a population parameter. We could claim that all soda bottles are filled with 20 ounces of beverage. The claim is that the parameter is mu = 20. Using sample data, we then compute xbar and run a hypothesis test to determine if we reject or fail to reject the null.
