16, 25, 36, 49, 64, ... = 4^2, 5^2, 6^2, 7^2, 8^2 ...
So the next number MIGHT be 9^2 = 81; and it is very likely that that is the intended answer.
But it should be noted that, with the way the problem is written, you could put ANY number next and it would be a valid sequence.
In any problem like this, where the sequence of numbers is given without any information about what kind of sequence, you can only look for a pattern and GUESS what the intended answer is....
