Something is incorrect, for sure.
converting each fraction on the left hand side to give two equivalent fractions with the same denominators gives us
1%2F3=8%2F24 and 3%2F8=9%2F24
adding these fractions together gives us
%288%2F24%29%2B%289%2F24%29=17%2F24 which is the correct answer.
there must be an error somewhere i suspect it should read 1%2F2 and not 1%2F3
