To get the most the answer could be we divide the 1st digit of 12,
which is 1, into the first digit of 30 with is 3.  1 goes into 3 
3 times, so we try 3, writing it above the line above the 0.

Then we multiply 3 by 12 and get 36 and write it under the 30.

But since 36 is larger than 30 we must erase the 3 and the 36, and
try the next smaller whole number than 3 which is 2.  So we try 2.
