x = Queenie's age today

Seven years ago2x-7x-7

Add the expressions in the bottom row. That sum is 16.

(2x-7) + (x-7) = 16
3x-14 = 16
3x = 16+14
3x = 30
x = 30/3
x = 10

Answer: Queenie is 10 years old.

If 7 years ago the sum of their ages was 16, then the sum of their ages now is 16+7+7 = 30.

x = Queenie's age now
2x = Paula's age now

x+2x=30
3x=30
x=10

ANSWER: Queenie is now x=10 years old
