You can put this solution on YOUR website! 4. One more than the difference between 18 and 7 times a number is -9
This is what we have tried:
7n + 18 +1 = -9
7n + 19 = -9
7n = -28
n= -4
Is this correct?
YOU ARE VERY CLOSE!!!!!! WORD PROBLEMS ARE GENERALLY FAR EASIER IF YOU LAY OUT THE PROBLEM, STEP BY STEP, AS I HAVE DONE BELOW.
Let n=the number
7 times the number is 7n
Difference between 18 and 7 times a number: 18-7n
One more than the difference between 18 and 7 times a number: (18-7n)+1
--------and we are told that this equals -9. So:
18-7n+1=-9 simplify
19-7n=-9 subtract 19 from both sides
19-19-7n=-9-19 collect like terms
-7x=-28 divide both sides by -7
n=4------------the number
CK
18-(7*4)+1=-9
18-28+1=-9
-10+1=-9
-9=-9
Hope this helps---ptaylor
