Question 487943: the school band is raising money. they plan to sell 500 tickets. adult tickets will be $4.50 and student tickets will be 2.50. they need to collect $1650 in ticket sales. How many adult and children tickets do they need to sell.
I got the correct answer by playing with numbers. (200 adult tickets and 300 student tickets) how do you write an equation to get there?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let a = number of adult tickets they need to sell
Let s = number of student tickets they need to sell
given:
(1) +a+%2B+s+=+500+
(2) +4.5a+%2B+2.5s++=+1650+
----------------------
From (2),
(2) +45a+%2B+25s+=+16500+
Multiply both sides of (1) by 25,
then subtract (1) from (2)
(2) +45a+%2B+25s++=+16500+
(1) +-25a+-+25s+=+-12500+
+20a+=+4000+
+a+=+200+
and, since
(1) +a+%2B+s+=+500+
(1) +s+=+300+
They need to sell 200 adult tickets and
300 student tickets

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
you can put this solution on YOUR website!
let x=adults' tickets
y=children's tickets

x+y=500
y=500-x
perform the indicated operations in the equation:
4.50x+2.50(500-x) =1650
4.50x+1250-2.50x =1650
4.50x-2.50x =1650-1250
2x/2= 400/2
x=200 adults' tickets
y=500-200
y=300 children's tickets
since, 200x4.50 =900
300x2.50 =750
900+750 =1650 ticket sales
thank you...=)
