You can put this solution on YOUR website!
45, 19
The equations I set up were
N-26=y and n+y=64
the first equation, n-26=y, is the statement "one number exceeds a number by 26"
I used n and y for the 2 numbers. One number (n) exceeds a number (y) by 26
So, one of the numbers is 26 more than the other number, being that the bigger number subtracted by 26 equals the smaller number
Then, n+y=64, is the statement "the sum of the numbers is 64"
Then, I used the equation n-26=y to find what n equaled
I added both sides by 26
N=y+26
then I substituted y+26 in for n in the equation n+y=64
(y+26)+y=64
then I added the two y's together
26+2y=64
then I subtracted 26 from both sides
2y=38
then I divided both sides by 2
Y=19
then, in the other equation, I substituted 19 for y
N-26=19
i added both sides by 26
N=45
