Question 212387: An airplane is flying at a speed of 350mi/h at an altitude of one mile and passes directly over a radar station at time t=0. 1. Express the horiztonal distance d (in miles) that the plane has flown as a function of t (I got d=350t) Express the distance s between the plane and the radar station as a function of d. Please help.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
An airplane is flying at a speed of 350mi/h at an altitude of one mile and passes directly over a radar station at time t=0. 1. Express the horizontal distance d (in miles) that the plane has flown as a function of t (I got d=350t) Express the distance s between the plane and the radar station as a function of d. Please help.

Step 1. Let velocity v=350 mph, altitude = h = 1 at t=0, horizontal distance = d = 350t.

Step 2. To get s use Pythagorean Theorem: Sum of the squares of the sides equals to the square of the hypotenuse which is s in this case where s is the distance between the plane and radar station.

s%5E2=d%5E2%2Bh%5E2

s%5E2=%28350t%29%5E2%2B1%5E2

s=sqrt%28%28350t%29%5E2%2B1%29 ANSWER terms of t

OR in terms of d

s=sqrt%28d%5E2%2B1%29 ANSWER in terms of d

I hope the above steps were helpful.

And good luck in your studies!
