Question 186239: A 4m by 6m rug covers half the floor area of a room and leaves a uniform strip of base floor around the edges. What are the dimensions of the room? Answer by checkley77(12844) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! 4*6=24 m^2 is the area of the rug.
(4+2x)(6+2x)=2*24
24+12x+4x+4x^2=48
8x+12x+24-48=0
8x+12x-24=0
4(2x^2+3-6)=0
4(2x-2)(x+3)=0
2x-2=0
2x=2
x=1 m. is the width of the edge.
Proof:
(4+2*1)(6+2*1)=2*24
(4+2)(6+2)=48
6*8=48
48=48
