which solution set is the empty set for the following inequalities?
1. y>1 and y<5
2. y>1 and y<-3
3. y>-3 and y<1
4. y>1 or y<-3

for "or" you have a solution; so 4. y>1 or y<-3 is NOT your answer
now, take a look at
1. y>1 and y<5 ....it says y>1 AND y<5 which is possible (y is between 1 and 5; it could be 2,3,or 4)..........NOT your answer
2. y>1 and y<-3....it says y>1 AND y<-3 which is impossible (if y is > 1, it could be 2,3,4,....+infinity; and, if y <-3, it could be any number from -3 to - infinity)...so,in this case solution set  the  set.....this IS your answer
3. y>-3 and y<1....it says y>-3 AND y<1 which is possible (y is between -3 and 1; it could be -2,-1,or 0)..NOT your answer
