The sum of two consecutive integers is 37. Find the number.

Step 1. Let n be the first integer.

Step 2. Let n%2B1 be the next consecutive integer

Step 3. Then n%2Bn%2B1=37 since the their sum is 37.

Step 4. Solving the equation in Step 3 yields the following steps

2n%2B1=37

Subtract 1 from both sides of the equation

2n%2B1-1=37-1

2n=36

Divide by 2 to both sides of the equation

2n%2F2=36%2F2

n=18 and n%2B1=19 and note their sum is 37 as a check.

Step 5. ANSWER: The two consecutive integers are 18 and 19.
