Question 223265: Substitution of an equation.
x+5y=4
3x+15y=-1
Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Substitution of an equation.
x+5y=4
3x+15y=-1
---------------
x = 4-5y
Substitute into the 2nd equation and solve for "y":
3(4-5y) + 15y = -1
12 -15y + 15y = -1
12 = 1
---------------------------
This contradiction happened because we assumed the
y in one equation equaled the y in the other; they
are not the same. The system is said to be inconsistent.
-----------------------
There is no solution. Graphing will show the lines
are parallel.
