Question 389460: I am making a top for a poker table. The table is an octagon. The top is also an octagon and has a diameter of 44in and side length of 18 1/2 in. I am wanting to add an oak trim ring around the top to make it wider. The trim ring will have a width of 3 in. I know that each piece will be a trapezoid with the shorter base length being 18 1/2 in and the height being 3 in but I don't know what the new longer base length will be. In other words i am asking if i add 3 in per side to a 44 in diameter octagon what would the new side lengths be.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! If the side length = 18.5, the diameter (from flat to flat) = 44.66"
If the diameter = 44, the side length = 18.225"
That might be more accuracy than you need, since it's probably made of wood.
Anyway, using 44 for the diameter and 18.225 for the sides:
Adding 3" makes the outside side length 20.71 inches.
