Question 1028439: ) Pipestone, Marshall, and Worthington are three cities. Pipestone is 36 miles west of Marshall,
and Worthington is 77 miles north of Marshall. Bert and Tre leave Pipestone at the same time.
Bert goes straight to Worthington at a speed of 25 miles per hour. Tre goes from Pipestone to
Marshall to Worthington at a speed of 35 miles per hour. Who will get to Worthington first?
How much longer will it take for the second person to arrive? Round to the nearest tenth of an
hour Answer by Cromlix(4381) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Hi there,
Consider your problem as
a right angled triangle.
Pipestone to Marshall is the base
Marshall to Worthington is the height.
Pipestone to Worthington is the hypotenuse.
Base = 36 miles
Height = 77 miles
Using Pythagoras Theorem
Hypotenuse = 85 miles.
Bert travelled directly to Worthington
at 25 mph. A distance of 85 miles
Time = Distance/Speed
Time = 85/25
Time = 3.4 hours
Tre travelled first to Marshall and
then to Worthington at 35 mph. A distance
of 36 + 77 = 113 miles
Time = Distance/Speed
Time = 113/35
Time = 3.2 hours
Tre will arrive first at Worthington
Bert will arrive 0.2 hours later.
0.2 hours = 12 minutes.
Hope this helps :-)
