Question 597495: I'm trying to help my daughter with her homework, but am clueless on how to solve the problem. She's working on inequality word problems. Here is the problem:
Paula ran a 15 kilometer race in 1 1/2 hours. Write an inequality to describe the average speeds s of runners who were faster than Paula. Graph the inequality.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Paula covered 15 km in 1.5 hours.
Her average speed is calculated as
distance%2Ftime+=+15km%2F1.5h=10km/h
Runners faster than Paula had speeds, s of more than 10 km/h.
You can write that as the inequality
s%3E10km/h
Inequalities involving just one letter variable are graphed on a number line, but the style of graph may be different depending on the country, school and teacher.
Some would hilghlight or color the line from 10 up and make an open circle around the 10, to show that the 10 is not included. (It would be a filled-in circle if 10 was part of the solution).

Others would do it differently.
If your daughter does not know, class notes, and textbook may tell you what style is preferred.
