You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I am thinking of two numbers.
a & b
Twice the first number added to four times the second number is 22.
2a + 4b = 22
simplify, divide by2
a + 2b = 11
The first number is one less than twice the second number.
a = 2b - 1
write as
a - 2b = -1
Find the two numbers.
using elimination
a + 2b = 11
a - 2b = -1
-------------------addition eliminates b, find a
2a = 10
a = 10/2
a = 5
find b using the simplified equation
5 + 2b = 11
2b = 11 - 5
2b = 6
b = 6/2
b = 3

Check in the 2nd original equation
5 - 2(3) = -1
