Question 297300: I cannot figure out how to work this problem, can you please help.
The sum of twice a number and 11 less than the number is the same as the difference between -35 and the number. What is the number.
I have tried this several ways.
2(x-11)=-35+x
2x -11-x=-35-x
Neither one comes out. Can you please show me where I am going wrong? Found 2 solutions by richwmiller, ankor@dixie-net.com:Answer by richwmiller(17219) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The sum of twice a number and 11 less than the number is the same as the difference between -35 and the number. What is the number.
:
I think the equation you want is:
:
2x + (x-11) = x - (-35)
2x + x - 11 = x + 35
3x - x = 35 + 11
2x = 46
x =
x = 23

Check solution
2(23) + (23-11) = 23 - (-35)
46 + 12 = 23 + 35
58 = 58
