Question 54196: Please help me with this problem. I missed this problem on a test:
Graph the equation y = 3x - 7 for -1 < x ≤ 3. What is the domain of the function? What is the range of the function?
Thank you.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The domain is already stated.
Domain: -1+%3C+x+%3C=+3
The range is a little harder to determine.
The lowest x can be is close to -1, but not equal to.
y = 3(-1) - 7
y = -3 - 7 = -10
The range is greater than -10. -10+%3C+y
Also, the greatest x can be is 3, and it can be equal to.
y = 3(3) - 7
y = 9 - 7 = 2
The range is less than or equal to two. 2+%3E=+y
Range: -10+%3C+y+%3C=+2

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
y=3x-7 -1%3Cx%3C=3
:
Domain has to do with what your x values are allowed to be, in your case, they told you your domain is highlight%28-1%3Cx%3C=3%29
Interval notation: (-1,3]
:
Range has to do with what your y values would be given that your domain is -1%3Cx%3C=3
If x=-1, then:
y=3(-1)-7=-10
If y=3(3)-7=2
Therefore your range is highlight%28-10%3Cy%3C=2%29
Pay attention to the inequality signs,y=-10 went with -1%3Cx. It was not inclusive.
y=2 went with x%3C=3. It was inclusive.
Happy Calculating!!!
