you can graph all of the problems on the same graph.

first you draw the graph of y = abs(x).

then you draw the graph of y = 2, y = 1, and y = -5.

the intersection of the graph of y = abs(x) and y = 2 and y = 1 and y = -5 contains your solutions.

when abs(x) = 2, then x = plus or minus 2.

when abs(x) = 1, then x = plus or minus 1.

when abs(x) = -5, there is no solution because the absolute value of a number can never be negative.

you can see that on the graph, because the lines of y = 1 and y = 2 intersect with the graph of y = abs(x), while the line of y = -5 doesn't.
