Question 1048968: An isosceles triangle has a vertical angle of 108 and base 20 cm long. Find its altitude?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Draw the altitude h perpendicular to the base which bisects
the vertex angle 108° into two 54° angles and bisects the base
into two parts each 10 cm in length. It also forms two congruent
right triangles.

Looking at the right triangle on the left, the side opposite
the 54° angle is 10 and the side adjacent to the 54° angle
is the unknown side h. We know that the tangent is the
opposite over the adjacent, so we have this equation:

tan%28%2254%B0%22%29%22%22=%22%2210%2Fh

We put 1 under the tan(54°)

tan%28%2254%B0%22%29%2F1%22%22=%22%2210%2Fh

We can cross multiply and get

h%2Atan%28%2254%B0%22%29%22%22=%22%2210

Then we divide both sides by tan(54°)

h%22%22=%22%2210%2Ftan%28%2254%B0%22%29

Now get your calculator and make sure
it is in degree mode.

h%22%22=%22%22matrix%281%2C2%2C+7.26542528%2Ccm%29
