You can put this solution on YOUR website!
" Deanne bought 6 tee shirts at $8.95 each. She figured out her total purchase using a shortcut: (6)($9) - (6)($.05) = $53.70. Her shortcut is an illustration of which property? Explain."
.
The idea is that it is easier deal in whole numbers. That is $8.95 is very close to $9. Take advantage of this in math.
.
Therefore, if you had to multiply:
6 * (8.95)
It is easier to represent the number in parenthesis as:
6 * (8.95)=6 * (9 - .05)
Then using the "distributive property" we have:
6 * (8.95)=6 * (9 - .05)= 6(9) - 6(.05)
.
Now, we've reduced a complicated multiplication to an easy one:
6(9) - 6(.05)
= 54 - .30
= $53.70
