Your teacher must have explained to you that i (for imaginary) is the symbol used to representsqrt%28-1%29, so:
x%5E2+-+16 Take the square root of both sides.
x = + or - sqrt%28-16%29 Simplify.
x = +or-sqrt%28-1%2A16%29
x = +or-4sqrt%28-1%29
x = +or-4i
The other problems are handled in a similar fashion.
