You can put this solution on YOUR website! Question:
The sum of two numbers is 112. The second is 7 more than 4 times the first. What are the two numbers?
Answer:
Assume that the first number = x
Four times the first number = 4x
7 more than four times the first = 4x + 7
Given that The second is 7 more than 4 times the first.....
So the second number = 4x + 7
Their sum is given as 112
so we can write,
x + 4x + 7 = 112
==> 5x + 7 = 112
Subtract 7 from both sides...
5x + 7 - 7 = 112 - 7
==> 5x = 105
Divide both sides by 5
==>
==> x = 21
So the first number is 21
Then the second number is 4x + 7 = 4 * 21 + 7 = 84 + 7 = 91
