The car drives 35mph for 35 miles, then 50mph for 100miles, and 53mph for 53miles.
What is the car average speed for the whole trip?
:
Find the total miles driven
35 + 100 + 53 = 188 miles
:
Find the total time (time = dist/speed)
35%2F35 + 100%2F50 + 53%2F53 =
1 + 2 + 1 = 4 hrs
:
188%2F4 = 47 mph is the average speed

The car drives 35mph for 35 miles, then 50mph for 100miles, and 53mph for 53miles. What is the car average speed for the whole trip?
-------------------------------------------------------------
Average speed = (total distance)/(total time)
-------------------------------------------------------------
35 mph for 35 miles takes 1 hr.
----------------
50 mph for 100 miles takes 2 hr.
----------------
53 mph for 53 miles takes 1 hr.
=====================================
Average speed = (35+100+53)/(1+2+1) = 188/4 = 47 mph
