Your second equation is, I'm thinking of a number divided by 12 and added to 5 that gets me 10.
Your job is to find those two numbers.
Your job requires you to move all that you know (numbers) on one side and all that you don't know (variable) over to the other side.
Your tools are addition, subtraction, multplication, division, and the various mathematical properties (distributive, commutative, additive inverse, multiplicative inverse, etc.).
Remember, what you do to one side of the equation you must do to the other side of the equation.
 Additive inverse of 9 added on both sides.
 Multiplicative inverse of 1/7 multiplied on both sides.
So in the first example, the number, when divided by 7 and added to 9 to give 3, equals -42.
Check your answer by plugging your solution into the original equation.
Since your answer leads to a true statement, you have a good answer.
