You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the angles be +x+ and +180+-+x+
Now I can say:
+5%2F4+=+x%2F%28+180-x+%29+
Multiply both sides by +4%2A%28+180-x+%29+
+5%2A%28+180-x+%29+=+4x+
+900+-+5x+=+4x+
Add +5x+ to both sides
+9x+=+900+
+x+=+100+
and, also
+180+-+x+=+180+-+100+
+180+-+x+=+80+
-----------------
The larger angle is 100 degrees
check:
+5%2F4+=+x%2F%28+180-x+%29+
+5%2F4+=+100%2F%28+180-100+%29+
+5%2F4+=+100%2F80+
+5%2F4+=+10%2F8+
+5%2F4+=+5%2F4+
OK

Hi, there--

THE PROBLEM:
If two supplementary angles are in the ratio of 5:4, what is the measure of the larger angle? PLEASE show me how to do this as well.

A SOLUTION:
Two angles are supplementary if the sum of their measures is 180.

Let x be the measure of the smaller angle.
The measure of the second angle is 180 minus the measure of the smaller one, or 180-x.

We know that the ratio of the two angle measures is 5:4. We can build a proportion of two ratios
comparing the measure of the larger angle to the measure of the smaller angle.

5%2F4=%28180-x%29%2Fx

We want to rewrite this equation without the denominators, to make it easier to solve. I show you this in
two steps, but you can combine them if you understand what's happening.

First Step: Multiply both sides of the equation by 4 to clear the denominator on the left.
4%2A%285%2F4%29=4%2A%28180-x%29%2Fx
cross%284%29%2A%285%2Fcross%284%29%29=4%2A%28180-x%29%2Fx

Second Step: Multiply both sides of the equation by x to clear the denominator on the right.
5=4%2A%28180-x%29%2Fx
x%2A5=x%2A4%2A%28180-x%29%2Fx
x%2A5=cross%28x%29%2A4%2A%28180-x%29%2Fcross%28x%29

(Note: You could have just multiplied both sides by 4x in a singe step.)

Now simplify and solve for x.
5x=720-4x

Add 4x to both sides to combine the x-terms on the left.
5x%2B4x=720
9x=720

Divide both sides by 9. (9x/9 is x.)
x=720%2F9
x=80

In the context of this problem, x=80 means the smaller angle has a measure of 80 degrees.

Since the angles are supplementary, the larger angle has a measure of 100 degrees (180-80=100.)
The ratio of 100:80 is equivalent to the ratio 5:4 because they differ by a scale factor of 20.

5%2F4%2A20%2F20=100%2F80

Hope this helps! Feel free to email if you have any questions about the solution.

Good luck with your math,
