let y be the age of son now
x=3y
after 12 years, age of man will be twice of his son
after 12 years, age of man = x+12
after 12 years, age of son = y+12
x+12 = 2*(y+12)
put x=3y in the above equation
3y+12 =2y+24
3y+12-2y=24
y+12=24
y=24-12
y= 12
age of son now= 12 years
age of man now = 12-3 = 36 years
