if Dupe's present age is years older than seun's present age, we have

Rewind the clock 10 years into the past
x-10 = Seun's age ten years ago
(x+12)-10 = x+2 = Dupe's age ten years ago
We're told that at this point in time "Dupe was three times Seun's age".
So,
Dupe's past age ten years ago = 3*(Seun's past age ten years ago)
x+2 = 3*(x-10)
x+2 = 3x-30
x-3x = -30-2
-2x = -32
x = -32/(-2)
x = 16
Seun's present age is 16 years.
x+12 = 16+12 = 28 is Dupe's present age
Check:
Rewind the clock 10 years to find that Seun was 16-10 = 6 years old and Dupe was 28-10 = 18 years old.
Then notice the jump from 6 to 18 is "times 3", ie 6*3 = 18, to help confirm we have the correct ages.
