The concept is simple: Separate the given numbers into three sets, one for each person. You want the total of the numbers in the set for Tom to be twice the total of the numbers in the set for Dick.

But solving the problem is purely a matter of trial and error; there is no useful mathematics involved.

Since solving the problem doesn't involve practice with any useful mathematics, my solving it and giving you the answer doesn't teach you anything. So I leave it to you to try to find a solution.

I note that all the dollar amounts are multiples of 4. So it should make the problem easier if you divide all the given dollar amounts by 4, so that you are working with smaller numbers; that might make it easier to find the solution.

To the reader who posted the comment "that is not an answer"....

All three responses you got to your question were exactly appropriate.

One of them basically said working the problem was a waste of time, presumably because working the problem teaches no useful mathematical skills.

My answer said basically the same thing, but gave you a hint for making it easier to find the answer.

And in a third response the tutor said he was able to solve the problem, giving you encouragement that the problem can be solved IF YOU PUT IN AN EFFORT.

The tutors on this forum are generally interested in helping you learn how to solve problems; their purpose is not to solve the problems for you.

Add the 3 smallest amounts. This is $192, and can be Dick's total
Twice Dick's amount of $192 = $384, which is Tom's.
Now, try to find 3 amounts that total $384. I know this is possible because I did! Can you?
