Question 1067260: Cameron is 21 years younger than Miranda. 8 years ago, Miranda's age was 2 times Cameron's age. How old is Cameron now?
A) Translate the given information into an equation using the variable x = current age of Cameron. Your equation should tell the story of the problem to someone reading it. That means your equation should contain 21, 8, and 2. Since you will be comparing the ages of Cameron and Miranda 8 years ago, 8 should appear once on each side of the equation. Do not simplify your equation.

--------
c = m - 21
m-8 = 2(c-8)
--------------------
Substitute for "m" and solve for "c"::
(c+21)-8 = 2c-16
c+13 = 2c-16
cameron = 29 yrs

So, the problem tells you to use x for the current age of Cameron. But doesn't say what to use for the age of Miranda, so I'll use M, you can change it to something else if you have to:
M = x+21 we will use this value for M below.
M-8 = 2(x-8)
M-8 = 2x-16 substitute for M:
(x+21)-8 = 2x-16
x+21 = 2x-8
-x = -29 multiply both sides times -1
x = 29 Cameron is 29 and Miranda is 29+21 = 50

Check:
M-8 = 2(x-8)
50-8 = 2(29-8)
42 = 42 Correct
