I was an instructor of ICS 171 "An Introduction to Artificial Intelligence Course" in the Winter Quarter 2001. Click here is the course web page.
I was an instructor of ICS 171 "An Introduction to Artificial Intelligence Course" in the Summer Session II, 1999.
Below you will find information and my advice on the courses I was teaching while a graduate student in the ICS. If you are TA for one of these courses, please, feel free to contact me if you want some advice or help.
The professor who teaches TAs in ICS is David Kay and each Fall he offers TA training seminars which very informally discuss the whole variety of teaching related issues. David's web page is full of interesting links for all students, both graduate and undergraduate, check it out!
While a graduate student in ICS, I was teaching 3 courses:
ICS 6A "Introduction to Discrete Mathematics", instructor Prof. Irani
This course was formerly Math 6A and was introduced in ICS in Fall 1997 to be taught by ICS faculty, so that accents in math important for computer science are made. The course is dense and covers a lot of material which is new for many of the students. You will have quizzes and homeworks each week, one midterm and one final exam. Please, do homeworks, do attend to discussion sections, ask questions and come to the office hours. Your progress will depend on how well and fast you capture the concepts, TAs will help you with that!
ICS 22 "Intro to CS II (Algorithms and Data Structures)", instructor Prof. Kay
This is the second course in the series of three, it is usually taught for and taken by students who have taken ICS 21. ICS 22 is an exciting course - you will learn the new algorithms and data structures, how to and when to use them and get familiar with basic analysis of complexity. Your responsibilty is labs, there are many of them so don't get the illusion that you will them all later. Moreover there is a penalty for late labs. Do attend lectures - almost all new material will be covered there and exams will be based on both labs and lectures. Discussion sections are again for your benefit, ask questions and figure out details of the requirements, discuss whatever you like with your TA!
ICS 171 "Introduction to Artificial Intelligence", instructor Prof. Dechter
ICS 171 is an upper-division course that familiarizes you with basic concepts in AI. It is usually offered in all quarters by different professors and, of course, style and requirements vary. Taking this last comment in consideration I would say that by all means you need to spend time on the lectures AND reading the recommended literature. You will need to do one or several projects - do not wait till last day to work on them. And again - do ask questions, do attend to discussion sections, the time you spend on learning will pay you off later!
