Can you win in Las Vegas? by Dmitry Pavlov

I guess the answer is clear, you can, with Lady Luck being in love with you. However, if Lady Luck is not your type of girl (or vice versa which is alas more likely), is there anything you can do? I would like to offer you a strategy and a couple of thoughts for consideration, and these got to be akin the ones you can buy in a fight on Ebay :-).

How it may work

All right, lets start with the definitions. We play blackjack (house has the least edge) and call a session a series of games that ends in a win. In other words, every session ends with our win, and once you win, the next session begins. The objective is to make each session overall profitable, i.e. all losses in a session need to be covered by this last win.

It is easy to see that to be profitable in each session, you will need to increase the amount you wager every time. Say you start with 1$. If you wager 1$ and win, you get our dollar back and one more dollar, for a profit of 1$ again, so this ends the session right away. If, on the other hand, you don't win, you will have to wager as much as to recoup the previous loss (1$) plus another minimal amount of 1$ to be profitable in case you win this time around. Thus, in case of the loss in the first round of a session, next time you bid 2$. If you win, fine, you get 4$ back, $2 was our original wager, and the rest $2 are going to cover the previous loss of 1$ and provide for a profit of 1$, thus ending the session. Try the Demo! here.

Well, and so on, every session ends with 1$ of profit, clearly you are going to become a millionaire, unless there is something wrong with the whole strategy. The wisdom here is that where the casino beats you is in that it has virtually unlimited time and unlimited resources, i.e. money, and you don't. The reason why this is important is that if you happen to be unlucky enough to loose a fair number of consecutive games (goes without saying that you should be able to play at least an optimal non-card-counting strategy that you can find on any gambling Web site, the requirement of odds being close to 50/50 is essential), you are looking at not only not winning your 1$ per session, but also loosing quite a lot of money. Granted, this is unlikely, but still possible, so you should always exercise a commonsense judgement of when to stop. Gamble responsibly, as they say.
