Linear_Equations_And_Systems_Word_Problems/1474: The perimeter of a triangle is 60 inches. The second side is 10 inches longer than the first side. The third side is 6 inches more than twice the first side. what is the length of the smallest side?
1 solutions

Answer 512 by usyim88hk(157) About Me  on 2005-05-04 00:30:17 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x be the length of the first side:
x = first side
x+10 = second side
2x+6 = third side
Now set up an equation:
x+x+10+2x+6 = 60 (because three sides add up to 60)
4x + 16 = 60
4x = 44
x = 11
So the length of the first side is 11
the length of the second side is 21
the length of the third side is 28

Travel_Word_Problems/1466: This is a car problem. But what I don't understand is how to take the information in the sentences and turn them into a problem to be worked out. So here it is...A car leaves Washington, D.C., for New York City at the same time another car leaves New York City for Washington, D.C. The car from Washington, D.C., travels at an average rate of 45 mi/h; the other car averages 55 mi/h. If the two cities are 240 mi apart, how soon will the cars meet and how far will each have traveled? What I basically need is some direction on how to solve this problem, and how to write an equation for it so that i can solve it. It's got me stomped BIG TIME! Thanks for your time!

Answer 511 by usyim88hk(157) About Me  on 2005-05-04 00:27:18 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
First let x be the time they meet
55x+45x = 240 (The speed times the time gives you the distance)
100x = 240
x = 2.4
So they used 2.4 hours to meet each other
the faster car traveled 2.4(55) = 132 miles
the slower car traveled 2.4(45) = 108 miles
hope you will get over this kind of problems

Age_Word_Problems/1502: Can you please help!! My wife and I have been out of school for more than 15 years and we are home schooling and need help solving this problem. Could you let us know how to get the answer step by step please.
Paul is 5 years older than twice Carlo's age. The sum of their age is 101. How old is Carlo's.
1 solutions

Answer 508 by usyim88hk(157) About Me  on 2005-05-04 00:16:34 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
First, let x be the age of Carlo
So x is the age of Carlo and 2x+5 is the age of Paul because it is twice the age of Carlo and plus five
Now we knwo that the sum of their age is 101, so we could set up an equation:
:
x + 2x + 5 = 101
(Age of Carlo plus age of Paul is equal to 101)
3x + 5 = 101
3x = 96
x = 32
So the age of Carlo is 32 and the age of Paul is 32 times 2 and plus 5 which is equal to 69

Linear-equations/1506: Good evening how would I Solve 2-3(4-x)=x-(3-x)
1 solutions

Answer 506 by usyim88hk(157) About Me  on 2005-05-04 00:10:54 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2-3(4-x) = x-(3-x)
First multiply 3 and (4-x)
2-12+3x = x-(3-x)
Then subtract 12 from 2
-10+3x = x-(3-x)
Now, subtract (3-x) from x
-10+3x = x-3+x
-10+3x = 2x-3
Now add three to both sides
-7+3x = 2x
subtract 3x from both sides
-7 = -x
Divide -1 from both sides
7 = x

Linear-equations/1507: How would i graph 5x-2y=-10

Answer 503 by usyim88hk(157) About Me  on 2005-05-03 23:56:05 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Well, to make it easier, we can first multiply both sides by -1
(-x^2-3x+5)(-1) = 0(-1)
x^2+3x-5 = 0
Now use the quardratic formula to solve
x=%28-3%2B-sqrt%283%5E2-4%281%29%28-5%29%29%29%2F%282%281%29%29
x=%28-3%2B-sqrt%2829%29%29%2F2
SO the answer can be %28-3%2Bsqrt%2829%29%2F2%29 or %28-3-sqrt%2829%29%2F2%29

Triangles/1513: If the area of a triangle is 125 mē and the base width equals 25 m. What is the height of the triangle.
1 solutions

Answer 502 by usyim88hk(157) About Me  on 2005-05-03 23:50:04 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Lets look at the formula to get the area of a triangle
A = (1/2)BH
whcih is also known as "The area of a triangle is equal to half of base times height
So now we could plug in the data we have into the equation
125 = (1/2)25H
250 = 25H
H = 10
So the height is 10m

Numbers_Word_Problems/1516: The larger of two numbers is 8 more than four times the smaller. If the larger is increased by four times the smaller, the result is 40. Find the numbers.
1 solutions

Answer 501 by usyim88hk(157) About Me  on 2005-05-03 23:46:08 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x be the smaller number:
x = smaller number
4x+8 = bigger number
4x+8+4x = 40 (If the larger is increased by four times the smaller, the result is 40)
8x+8 = 40
8x = 32
x = 4
So the small number is 4 and the bigger number is 4(4)+8 = 24

(my age after three years is half of Chad's age after three years)
x+3 = 1.5x
3 = 0.5x
x = 6
So now I am 6 years old

1 solutions

Answer 492 by usyim88hk(157) About Me  on 2005-05-02 19:08:48 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x be the smallest integer and x+1 be the second one and x+2 be the third one:
x^2 + (x+1)^2 + (x+2)^2 = 434
x^2 + (x^2+2x+1) + (x^2+4x+4) = 434
x^2+x^2+x^2+2x+4x+1+4 = 434
3x^2+6x-429 = 0 <---------- quadratic equation
Now use the quadratic formula to solve for x
x=%28-6%2B-sqrt%286%5E2-4%283%29%28-429%29%29%29%2F%282%283%29%29
x=%28-6%2B-sqrt%285184%29%29%2F6
x=%28-6%2B-72%29%2F6
x = 66/6 or -78/6
x = 11 or -13
So the three numbers can be [11, 12 ,13] or [-13, -12, -11]

Geometry_Word_Problems/1377: A rectangular stage has an area of 600 square yards. The length of the stage must be more than 10 yard more than the width. Find the dimension of the stage nedded.
1 solutions

Answer 462 by usyim88hk(157) About Me  on 2005-04-29 19:35:08 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x be the width of the stage:
x*(x+10) = 600
(the width times the length whcih is equal to 600)
x^2+10x = 600
x^2+10x-600 = 0
Now factor the equation
(x+30)(x-20) = 0
x = -30 or 20
Because length of anything can not be a negative number, so 20 is the width and x+10 whcih is 30 is the length of the stage.

Rate-of-work-word-problems/1441: I want to know not only the answer to the question but also how to solve it. If Sally can paint a house in 4 hours, and John can paint the same house in 6 hour, how long will it take for both of them to paint the house together?
1 solutions

Answer 461 by usyim88hk(157) About Me  on 2005-04-29 19:00:21 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I thoguht I did this question and "solve" it...ARRR....
because sally can paint a house in 4 hours, that's why she can paint 1/4 of a house in one hour, right?
because john can paint a house in 6 hours, that's why he can paint 1/6 of a house in one hour, right?
Then we have to let 1 be the total painting they have to do for the house because one means one house, right?
So we have to let x be the number of hours they need to paint one house
and now we can set up an equation:
((1/4)+(1/6))x = 1
(5/12)x = 1
now multiply both sides by (12/5) to find out what x is
x = (12/5)
So they took (12/5) hours to paint one house together, get it???

Answer 449 by usyim88hk(157) About Me  on 2005-04-28 22:43:48 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
So this will form a triangle:
(If you are in high level math, you will notice that it is a 5-12-13 triangle which has sides length of 5, 12 and 13, but if you don't, we will solve it now)
let x be the distance from the ladder to the ground
x^2 + (x-7)^2 = 13^2
x^2 + x^2 - 14x +49 = 169
2x^2 - 14x - 120 = 0
Now use the quardratic formula to solve:
x=%2814%2B-sqrt%28%28-14%29%5E2-4%282%29%28-120%29%29%29%2F%282%282%29%29
x=%2814%2B-sqrt%281156%29%29%2F4
x=%2814%2B-34%29%2F4
x = 48/4 or -20/4
x = 12 or -5
Because length of anything can not be a negative number, so 12 is the answer.

Rectangles/1421: The width of a rectangle is 45% of the length. If the perimeter of the rectangle is 58cm, find its width.

Linear-equations/1426: Let m represent the slope and b represent the y-intercept. Find the slope m and the y-intercept b for: 3x - 4y = 12.
1 solutions

Answer 446 by usyim88hk(157) About Me  on 2005-04-28 22:32:37 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
3x - 4y = 12
We have to make y stand alone on one side to find m and b, so minus 3x from both sides
-4y = 12-3x
Divide both sides by -1
4y = 3x-12
divide both sides by 4
y = (3/4)x - 3
So m is (3/4) and b is -3
