Linear-equations/647766: Could you please help me find the slope and Y intercept of the line
3x-4y=-24
Thank you for your time and help 1 solutions
Answer 406364 by unlockmath(1614) on 2012-09-08 14:52:53 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Hello,
Let's get the equation (3x-4y=-24) into this form: y=mx+b (Note: the b in this equation tells us where the line crosses the y axis and m tells us the slope.)
3x-4y=-24
Subtract 3x and divide by -4 to get:
y=3/4x+6
So now we know the slope is 3/4 and crosses the y axis at 6.

Triangles/645282: Sharks' teeth are shaped like triangles. the height of a tooth of a certain shark is 1 cm longer than the base. the area is 36cm^2. find the height and the base. 1 solutions
Answer 405417 by unlockmath(1614) on 2012-09-03 22:33:13 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Hello,
Area of a Triangle is equal to (1/2)base*height
so let's plug in what we know: (note: represent base as x)
36=(1/2)(x)(x+1)
Expand:
36=1/2x^2+1/2x
Multiply by 2 and subtract 72:
x^2+x-72=0
Factor this:
(x-8)(x+9)=0
x=8
x=-0
So the base is 8 cm and
height is 9 cm

Linear-systems/644307: how do you solve 1-5 using the substitution method.
1. 4x+3y=11
x=3y-1
2. 2x+3y=5
x=4-2y
3. 3x-2y=11
y=5-2x
4. x+y=-5
4x-2y=10
5. y=2x-1
y=2-x 1 solutions
Answer 404948 by unlockmath(1614) on 2012-09-01 17:02:52 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Hello,
I'll do the first one, let's see if you can do the rest of them.
4x+3y=11
x=3y-1
Substitute the second equation into the first like this:
4(3y-1)+3y=11
Expand:
12y-4+3y=11
Add 4 and combine:
15y=15
Divide by 15:
y=1
Plug this into either equation to find x:
x=2

Linear-equations/644211: Find an equation of the line satisfying the given conditions:
10. (a)The slope is -2 and through the point (-4,3);
(b)through the two points (3,1) and (-5,4) 1 solutions
Answer 404898 by unlockmath(1614) on 2012-09-01 10:58:25 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Hello,
We know this:
y=mx+b
Plug in the values:
3=-2(-4)+b
Solve:
b=-5
Now we know:
y=-2x-5
I'll let you solve the other two.

Trigonometry-basics/644219: If the diagonals of a rectangle are represented by (2x2 – 8x + 17 )m and ( x2 + 2x – 7 )m, find the value of x. How long is each diagonal? 1 solutions
Answer 404897 by unlockmath(1614) on 2012-09-01 10:52:45 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Hello,
Since we know the diagonals are equal in a rectangle we can set up this:
2x^2 – 8x + 17 = x^2 + 2x – 7
Subtract x^2, 2x and add 7:
x^2 -10x +24 =0
Factor:
(x-6)(x-4)=0
Solve for x:
x=6
x=4
We have two possible answers: 6 & 4

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Hello,
Here's a big hint:
The line (Called the Fraction bar) has a meaning. Actually there are 6 meanings which math books to not cover with students. The meaning you want is:
"Divided by"
So an example is 1/2
1 divided by 2 is .5

Linear-equations/641593: What is the equation of a line that is parallel to the line y=5x-6 and passes through the point (-2,3)? 1 solutions
Answer 403733 by unlockmath(1614) on 2012-08-26 23:20:24 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Hello,
Since we know the slope is 5 for the parallel line then plug in (-2,3):
3=5(-2)+b
Solve for b:
b=13
Therefore the parallel line is:
y=5x+13

Length-and-distance/640995: If a picnic area is loacted at the midpoint between Sacramento and Oakland, find the distance to the picnic area from the road sign. (There is a road sign picture next to the problem but I'm not sure if it's relevant but it says: Roaseville 5, Sacramento 23, Oakland 110) 1 solutions
Answer 403508 by unlockmath(1614) on 2012-08-25 11:04:05 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Hello,
From the info given, it appears the traveler is 23 miles from Sac and 110 miles from Oakland going one way. If so, first subtract 23 from 110 to give us:
87 miles between Oak and Sac
Now divide this by 2:
43.5 miles is the distance midway between the two cities.
