Proportions/25975: 4 pencils and 2 pens cost $1.08 6 pencils and 5 pens cost $2.22 find the cost of each pen and pencil

1 solutions

Answer 46623 by tran3209(100) About Me  on 2007-01-01 17:33:53 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
First you can find the cost of each pen using the given information: 5 pens cost $2.22.
+2.22%2F5+ = 0.44+
So now we know each pen cost $0.44.
Now since they purchased 4 pencils and 2 pens and recieved a total of $1.08, we will find the cost of each pencil.
Suppose the cost of pencils is "x".
+4x+%2B+2%280.44%29+=+1.08+ The 2(0.44) is the cost of 2 pens @ $0.44 each.
+4x+%2B+0.88+=+1.08+
+4x+=+0.2+ <---- Subtract 0.88 from each side.
+x+=+0.05+
The Answer: (1) Pen cost $0.88
(1) Pencil cost $0.05

Answer 27002 by tran3209(100) About Me  on 2006-06-12 19:17:41 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
First of all we need to pick a value for x.
X|Y
_____
0|2
4|5
If we suppose x is equal to 0 then the equation would look like:
y=%283%2F4%29%280%29%2B2
y=0%2B2
y=2
If we suppose x is equal to 4 then the equation would look like this:
y=%283%2F4%29%284%29%2B2
y=%2812%2F4%29%2B2
y=3%2B2
y=5
Now we have 2 points so we can draw the line.

y=2x+3
This is an equation of a line
We need to find 2 points to draw the line.
Find The y intercept and x intercept
if x is 0 y = 3
y=3 is the y intercept
if y is 0 x= -3/2
x=-3/2 is the x intercept
By joining the 2 points together you will find the line
y=x^2 + 3
This is an equation of a parabola.
y=ax^2+bx+c
Here a=1 b=0 c=3
a=1>0 the parabola opens upwards
The coordinates of the minimum point are
x=-b/2a = 0/2 =0
y(0)=0^2+3 y = 3
we need 2 more points to draw the parabola.
x=1 y=-4
x=-1 y = 4
Join the tree points together and you see the parabola
y=3x
This is the equation of a line that passes through the point O of the axis
y=ax
We need 1 more point to draw the line
x=1 y=3
Join point O and this point (x=1 y=3) we have the line.

Answer 26775 by tran3209(100) About Me  on 2006-06-09 19:47:35 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Suppose that x is the height of K2
Then that makes Mt.Everest is x+237
Then you can put together a simple formula to solve for x
x+%2B+%28x%2B237%29+=+17%2C459
x+%2B+x+%2B+237+=+17%2C459
2x+%2B+237+=+17%2C459
2x+=+17%2C459-237
2x+=+17%2C222
x+=+17%2C222%2F2
x+=+8611
The height of K2 is 8,611 feet
The height of Mt.Everest is (8611 + 237) or 8848 feet
