Find the domain of f(x) = 7+(square root sign) 3x +21 and express it using interval notation.
I am so lost
Thanx for anyones help 1 solutions
Answer 53580 by stanbon(57424) on 2007-03-15 20:52:39 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Find the domain of f(x) = 7+(square root sign) 3x +21 and express it using interval notation.
--------------
y = 7 + sqrt(3x+21)
That 3x+21 must not be negative; it must be greater than or equal to zero
so that y can be a Real numberl
----------
So, 3x+21>=0
3x>=-21
x>=-7
--------------
So, Domain is all Real numbers x>=-7

Functions/74600: what are the domains of these expressions? How do I find these domains?
1). the sqrt of 2-x
2). x-3 over x+2
3). 3x^2 +2x -8 1 solutions
Answer 53579 by stanbon(57424) on 2007-03-15 20:48:48 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Find Domain of the following:
Domains are unrestricted unless certain x-values result in
non-Real numbers or produce denominators of zero.
1). the sqrt of (2-x
To avoid non-Real number results 2-x >=0; x<=2
So, Domain is all Real numbers x<=2
--------------
2). x-3 over x+2
To keep the denominator a non-zero value, x must not be -2
So, Domain is all Real numbers except x=-2
--------------
3). 3x^2 +2x -8
X can take on any value.
So, Domain is all Real numbers.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!4x+y<1
8y-3x>24

Rewrite as:
4x+y=1
-3x+8y=4

Multiply 1st equation by 8 to get:
32x+8y=8
-3x+8y=4
---------
Subtract to get:
35x=4
x=4/35
--------
Substitute to solve for "y"
4(4/35)+y=1
y = 35/35-16/35 = 19/35

The lines cross at (4/35,19/35)
Sketch the line y=-4x+1 the point you want must be below it (less y value)

Question: Determine the standard equation of the parabola.
----------------------------
The V point is the vertex.
The vertex form of this parabola that opens downward is (x-h)^2 = 4p(y-k)
where (h,k) is the vertex.
So, (x+3)^2=4p(y-4)
When x=-5, y=0 so substitute and solve for "p".
(-5+3)^2 = 4p(0-4)
4=4p(-4)
p=-1/4

Answer 53540 by stanbon(57424) on 2007-03-15 16:13:01 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!2x^3+4x^2-22x-24=0
x^3+2x^2-11x-12 = 0
Notice that f(-1)=0 so x=-1 is a zero.
Use synthetic division to find the quotient after dividing by (x+1):
-1....1....2....-11....-12
.......1....1.....-12..|..0
So, x^2+x-12 is the other factor after dividing:
It factors into (x+4)(x-3)
Therefore x=-4, and x=3 are also zeroes.

Hi! I just submitted this problem, but I think I figured it out! Can someone tell me if this is correct?
Write an equation for an ellipse if the endpoints of the major axis are at (1,6) and (1,-6) and the endpoints of the minor axis are at (5,0) and (-3,0).
The length of the major axis would be 12 units. 2a=12. a=6.
The length of the minor axis is 8 units. 2b=8. b=4.
The equation for an ellipse is y^2/a^2 + x^2/b^2=1.
So the answer would be y^2/36 + x^2/16=1.

Mixture_Word_Problems/74505: A tank holds 80 liters of a chemical solution. Currently the solution has a strength of 30%. How much of this solution must be drained and replaced with a 70% solution to get a strength of 40%? 1 solutions

You can put this solution on YOUR website!A tank holds 80 liters of a chemical solution. Currently the solution has a strength of 30%. How much of this solution must be drained and replaced with a 70% solution to get a strength of 40%?
-------------
30% solution DATA:
Amt = 80 L ; amt of active ingredient = 0.3*80 = 24 L
----------
70% solution DATA:
Amt = x L ; amt of active ingredient = 0.7x L
-------------
40% remainder DATA:
Amt = (80) L ; Amt of active ingredient = 0.4(80) = 32 L
-------------------
EQUATION:
active - active = active
24 + 0.7x = 32
0.7x = 8
x= 11.43 L
-------------------

Probability-and-statistics/14613: It has been estimated that eighty percent of people with coronoary disease have chest pain syptom and twenty-five percent of people without the disease have chest pain symptoms. A person visits a doctor with chest pain symptom, what are the probabilities of the following events?
a) the person has coronary heart disease
b)the person does not have coronary disease.
I have just started my module on probability, I know this maybe pretty basic stuff, but would appreciate any help that will make it easier for me to understand the subject,thanks in advance. 1 solutions

Looks like a Bayes Problem:
Let "D" mean "has coronary disease"; Let "p" means "has pain".
P(D|P) = P(D and P)/[P(P and D) + P(P and not D)
= 0.80/(0.80 + 0.25) = 0.8/1.05 = 0.762
-------------------
b)the person does not have coronary disease.
Also, looks like a Bayes Problem.
P(not D |Pain) = P(not D and Pain)/[P(not D and Pain) + P(not D and not Pain)
=0.25/[0.25+0.20) = 0.556

Probability-and-statistics/14625: First of all, thaks for helping in advance...
Here's the problem
Suppose there are 10 items on a true-false test. The person taking the test does not read the questions; he just answers each question randomly. What is the probability of his guessing all answers correctly?
I ended up with 1/512...but I started this a while ago and now I've forgotten how I got to that. Any help would be great.
Thanks,

You can put this solution on YOUR website!The probability of getting one answer right is 1/2
The probability of getting two right is 1/2 *1/2 = 1/2^2=1/4
You multiply because the events are independent; what you do
on one problem does not effect what you do on the next.
The prob of get all 10 right is (1/2)^10 = 1/1024
