what is the commutative property?
Most people "commute" to work; they live one place and work another place.
The communtative property means "you can change places" when it comes
to addition or multiplication:
Add: a+b = b+a
Mult: a*b = b*a

Write the answer in set notation and interval notation.
--------------------
Solve the EQUALITY:
x = -2, x=1, x=3
-------------
Draw a number line.
Mark x=-2, x=1, and x=3 on the line.
They divide the line into four intervals.
Look for solutions for the INEQUALITY in each of the intervals.
Do this by inserting a test value into (x+2)(x-1)(x-3)<0:
In (-inf,-2)select x=-3; you get -*-*- <0 so there are solutions here
In (-2,1) select x=0; you get +*-*->0 so no solutions here
In (1,3) select x=2; you get +*+*-<0 so solutions here
In (3,+inf) select x=4; you get +*+*+>0 so no solutions here
-------------------
Final answer:
Interval notation: [-2,1] or [1,3]
Set notation: {x|-2<=x<=1}U{x|1<=x<=}

If the shop sells dinner tables for $120 and coffee tables for $150, how many of each item should be produced for a maximum weekly income? What is the maximum weekly income?
--------
Let "d" be number of dinner tables; let "c" be number of coffee tables.
----------
d >= 9
c >= 13
c + d <= 30
------------------
Draw a c,d coordinate system; let the horizontal axis be c and the vertical d.

Draw a vertical line at c=13
Draw a horizontal line at d=9
Draw the line d = -c + 30
Find the vertices of the enclosed area.

Draw the triangle and label the hypotenuse as 5 and one of the legs as 3
Let the 3rd leg be "x".
Then x^2 + 3^2 = 5^2
x^2 = 5^2 - 3^2
x^2 = 25-9
x^2 = 16
x = 4

Label the "x"-side with a 4.

x/42 = 27.5/1
x = 42*27.5 = 1155

In 2006 39.6 million people lived below poverty level in the U.S. This represents a 80% increase from the number in 2002. How many people lived below the poverty level in 2006?
------------
Let "x" be the number below the poverty line in 2006.
-------------
EQUAITON:
x + 0.80x = 39.6 million
1.80x = 39.6 million
x = (39.6/1.80)million
x = 22 million

Linear-systems/99250: derive the slope-intercept form of a linear equation from the slope formula using (o,b) as the coordinates of the point where the line crosses the y-axis and arbitrary point (x,y).

derive the slope-intercept form of a linear equation from the slope formula using (o,b) as the coordinates of the point where the line crosses the y-axis and arbitrary point (x,y).
---------------
You are given two points: (0,b) and (x,y)
slope = change in y / change in x = y-b/x-0 = (y-b)/x
So, m=(y-b)/x
Solve for y as follows:
mx = y-b
y = mx+b

Parallelograms/99261: This question is from textbook Advanced Mathematical Concepts
I have four coordinates, and i want to know how to figure out if the four points make a parallelogram?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Plot the four points and label them A,B,C,D.
If AB is opposite CD show that their slopes and their lengths are the same.
If BD and AC are opposite show the same about their slopes and lengths.

You cannot solve a single equation with three variables with matrices.
You need a total of three equations with the same three variables.

Please help me solve this problem. Thank you.
describe the transformation on the following graph of f(x) = e^x. State the placement of the horizontal asymptote and y- intercept after the transformation. For example, " left 1 or rotated about the y-axis are descriptions.
a) g(x)=e^x +3 ( actually the x is above the e )

Transformation description: Each point is moved upward 3 units.
Horizontal asymptote: After the transformation the horizontal asymptote is y=3
y-intercept: after the transformation the y-intercept is (0,4)

Find the slope of the line through the following pairs of points.
(-5, -3) and (-5, 2)
-----------
slope = change in y / change in x = (2--3)/(-5--5) = 5/0 = undefined
----------------------
Find the constant of variation k.
m varies directly with n; m = 144 when n = 8.
m = kn
144 = k*8
k = 144/8 = 18

spending on advertising?
x/180,000 = 2000/120000
x = 180000(1/60) = $3000 (amount owner is spending on advertising)

Equations/99101: PLEASE HELP ME SOLVE THS PROBLEM
IF THE TOTAL COST OF X APPLES IS B CENTS, WHAT IS A GENERAL FORMULA FOR THE COSTS, IN CENTS, OF Y APPLES?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
IF THE TOTAL COST OF X APPLES IS B CENTS, WHAT IS A GENERAL FORMULA FOR THE COSTS, IN CENTS, OF Y APPLES?
----------------------
Each apple cost x/b cents
So y apples will cost y(x/b) cents.
-------------------------------
You could also do this with a proportion:
Let "c" be the cost of y apples.
c/y = x/b
Multiply both sides by y to get:
c = y(x/b) cents
