My homework is based on questions like these, so if someone helps answer them i may be able to figure out the rest. i looked on the note sheet i have to help explain but i still don't understand, it's very hard for my to understand algerbra.
one example i wrote down is:
what are the odds against drawing a diamond from a standard 52 card deck.
so it's 52/4 = 13 diamonds in a deck, number of unfavorable outcomes/number of favorable outcomes = 39/13=3/1.
i can understand the begining but where did the 39 come from?
please help.

-------
Note: (1/5) + (2/15) + (2/3) = (3/15) + (2/15) + (10/15) = 15/15 = 1
Equations:
Value Equation: p + 5n + 10d = 100 cents
-----
Let "x" be the number of coins.
p = (2/3)x
n = (2/15)x
d = (1/5)x
----
Substitute and solve for "x"
(2/3)x + 5(2/15)x + 10(1/5)x = 100

Multiply thru by 15:
10x + 10x + 30x = 1500

A sample of 106 golfers showed that their average score on a particular golf course was 87.98 with a standard deviation of 5.39.
Answer each of the following (SHOW ALL WORK and state the FINAL answer to at least TWO Decimal places):
(A) Find the 90% confidence interval of the mean score for all 106 golfers.
x-bar = 87.98
ME = 1.645*5.39/sqrt(106) = 0.8612
--------------------------------------
90% CI: 87.98-0.8612 < u < 87.98+0.8612
=================================================
(B) Find the 90% confidence interval of the mean score for all golfers if this is a sample of 130 golfers instead of a sample of 106.
new ME = 1.645*5.39/sqrt(130) = 0.7776
90% CI: 87.98-0.7776 < u < 87.98+0.7776
---------------
(C) Which confidence interval is larger and why?
The 1st is larger because the sample size is smaller.
Note 2 things:
1st: The CI is ALWAYS 2*ME in width
2nd: Since ME and sqrt(n) are indirectly related, ME gets
smaller when n gets larger.
That makes sense because having a larger sample means you
have more information; so the confidence interval can be tighter.

Rate-of-work-word-problems/662754: Pipe A can fill a tank in 14 hours. Pipe B can empty a tank in 10 hours. Miscommunication between Emilio and Stephen causes Emilio to release water into Pipe A at the same time as Stephen opens Pipe B to empty the tank. With both pipes open to the tank, how long does it take to empty the tank?

----
Pipe A rate = 1/14 job/hr
Pipe B rate = 1/10 job/hr
------
Together rate = 1/x job/hr
=================================
Note: The job is to empty the tank, so Pipe A has a negative rate.
Equation:
rate - rate = together rate
-1/14 + 1/10 = 1/x
-10x + 14x = 14*10x
4x = 140x
x= 35 hrs (time to emptythe tank working together)

If your toral is 4.65 and you have to add 5%of tax .what is the toral including the tax?
Let price after tax be "x":
Equation:
x = 4.65 + 0.05*4.65
x = 4.65 + 0.2325
x = $4.88

working together, Dan and Leah can mow a lawn in 1hour and 12 min. working alone , Leah can mow the lawn in 1hour less time than it would take Dan. Find the time it takes for each of them working alone?
-----
Note: 1 hr 12 min = 6/5 hours
------
Dan DATA: time = x hrs/job ; rate = 1/x job/hr
----
Leah DATA: time = x-1 hrs/job ; rate = 1/(x-1) job/hr
-----
Together DATA: time = 6/5 hrs/job ; rate = 5/6 job/hr
----------------
Equation:
rate + rate = together rate
1/x + 1/(x-1) = 5/6
-----
6(x-1) + 6x = 5x(x-1)
-----
6x-6 + 6x = 5x^2 - 5x
5x^2 -17x +6 = 0
x = 3 hrs (Dan's time to do the job alone)
x-1 = 2 hrs (Leah's time to do the job alone)

----
You have 2 points (7,10,2) and (10,13.8)
0000
slope = (13.8-10.2)/(10-7) = 3.6/3 = 1.2
---
Form: y = mx + b
You know y = 10.2 when x = 7 and m = 1.2
-------
Solve for "b":
10.2 = 1.2*7 + b
b = 1.8
----
Equation:
y = 1.2x + 1.8

Mixture_Word_Problems/662621: In addition to oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions, there are also double emulsions called water-in-oil-in-water (w/o/w or WOW) and oil-in-water-in oil (o/w/o or OWO). WOW’s are more commonly used because food and supplements are usually composed of a continuous aqueous phase. WOW’s have recently been receiving enhanced news coverage due to their ability to potentially reduce the amount of fat in common foods. Based on what you already know about emulsion creation, hypothesize how you think a WOW emulsion is made. Make sure to back up your hypothesis with fact/reason.

express answer with positive exponents.
[43x^-4y^4/86x^0y^-5]^3
-----
Better Procedure: Work INSIDE the parenthesis before cubing the result.
------------------------
= [(43/86)(1/x^4)(y^9)]^3
------
= [(1/2)(y^9/x^4)]^3
---
= (1/8)(y^27/x^12)
