You can put this solution on YOUR website!Suppose you are offered two jobs. One pays $30,000 the first year with annual raises of $2000 each year. The second offers a starting salary of $27,000 and raises 8% each year. At the end of ten years, what would your yearly salary be from
(a) first job?
EQUATION:
salary = 30000 + 2000x, where x is the number of years after the 1st>
s(9) = 30,000 = 2000*9 = $48,000
---------------------------------------
(b) second job?
EQUATION:
salary = 27000*(1+0.08)^x where x is the number of years of work.
s(10) = 27000(1.08)^9 = $53,973.12

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Why does the inequality sign change when both sides are divided and multiplied by a negative number? Does this happen with equations?
----------------
Try it with numbers and you will see what happens:
Start: -6 < 18
Multiply both sides by -2
End: 12 > -36
The inequality switched and each of the sides changed sign.
-----------------------------
Start -6 < 18
Divide both sides by -2
End: 3 > -9
Again, the inequality switch and each of the sides changed sign.

---------------------------
You have two points and can generate an equation but the assumption is
that the temperature continues to rise as the day goes on; that is not true.
------------------------------
(0,7degrees) (13,9.5 degrees)
slope = 2.5
intercept = 7
EQUATION:
temp = 2.5(hrs. after 6am) + 7
temp(7pm)=2.5*11 + 7 = 34.5

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Olivia, Newt, and John were each born 3 years apart, with Olivia the youngest and john the oldest. The sum of the squares of their ages is 606. How old is each?
-----------------------
Let Olivia's age be "x"
Newt's age is "x+3"
John's age is "x+6"
----------------------
EQUATION
x^2 + (x+3)^2 + (x+6)^2 = 606
x^2 + x^+6x+9 + x^2+12x+36 = 606
3x^2 + 18x + 45 = 606
x^2 + 6x - 187 = -
(x-11)(x+17)=0
Positive Solution:
x = 11 (Olivia's age)
x+3 = 14 (Newt's age)
x+6 = 17 (John's age)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Show that a=-3 and b =1 are the lower and upper bounds fro all zeros of the polynomial
--------------------
There are several ways to do this.
One is to find all the zeroes.
----------
Use synthetic division:
-2)....2....5.....1....-2
........2....1....-1..|..0
so x=-2 is a zero
Since the quotient is 2x^2+x-1
There are two other zeros:
x = [-1 +- sqrt(1-4*2*-1))/4
x = [-1 +- sqrt(9)]/4
x = 1/2 or x = -1
-----------------------
So x=-3 and x=1 are definately lower and upper bounds

I believe the equation is:

--------------
Your equation is an exponential equaation.
It is either an increasing function (b>1) or a decreasing
function (0 < b < 1)
----------------
You will not get a spiral graph out of it because the
TI-83 uses the Real Number line as its domain.
----------------
If you want theta to run from 0 to 2pi and then 0 to 2pi
repeatedly you would have to plot your points and see
how the curve is affected.
---------------------------------
Also, keep in mind, the TI can only plot functions. If
there are two or more y values associated with any x-value
the TI cannot graph it.

Start: 22.5/66 = 34% water in the cement before additional water added
---------------
Add: x kg of water
----------------
End up with: (x+66) kg of cement containing 40% water.
---------------
EQUATION:
water + water = water
22.5 + x = 0.40(66+x)
22.5 + x = 26.4 + 0.4x
0.6x = 3.9
x = 6.5 kg of water must be added

12.48 In the following regression, X = weekly pay, Y = income tax withheld, and
n = 35 McDonald’s employees.
(a) Write the fitted regression equation.
(b) State the degrees of freedom for a two-tailed test for zero slope, and use Appendix D to find the
critical value at alpha = .05.
(c) What is your conclusion about the slope?
(d) Interpret the 95 percent confidence limits for the slope.
(e) Verify that F = t2 for the slope.
(f) In your own words, describe the fit of this regression.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!You will have to judge whether this feedback makes any sense as this is
not a familiar area for me.
_____________________________
In the following regression, X = weekly pay, Y = income tax withheld, and
n = 35 McDonald’s employees.
(a) Write the fitted regression equation.
Looking at your "Regression Output" I see
Y = 0.0343X + 30.7963
-------------------------------------
(b) State the degrees of freedom for a two-tailed test for zero slope, and use Appendix D to find the
critical value at alpha = .05.
-------
Again, based on your "Regression Output" data, df=33
I don't know what your "D" chart is but you have to look
at it to find the critical values for 2-tail tests with
alpha=5%
----------------
(c) What is your conclusion about the slope?
The p-value is 0.0068 so, whatever your Ho is, you
are going to reject it.
------------------------------------
(d) Interpret the 95 percent confidence limits for the slope.
With 95% confidence you can claim the slope of the regression
line is between 0.0101 and 0.0584.
----------------------------
(e) Verify that F = t2 for the slope.
Not sure what this is all about.
------------------------------
(f) In your own words, describe the fit of this regression.
I'll leave that to you.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!The probability that a man will be alive in 25 years is 3/5 and that his wife will be alive in 25 years is 2/3.find the probability
1). P(both will be alive) = (3/5)(2/5) = 6/25
2). P(only the man will be alive= (3/5)(1/3)= (1/5)
3). P(only the wife will be alive)=(2/5)(2/3) = 4/15
4). P(atleast one will be alive) = 1-P(both die) = 1-(2/5)(1/3) = 13/15
5). P(neither will be alive) = (2/5)(1/3) = 2/15

Linear-equations/131479: Can you plese help me with the following?
I need to solve and graph the following equation and interpet the result:
2x-3y=6 and 2x+y=-10. 1 solutions
Answer 95965 by stanbon(57290) on 2008-03-11 10:46:11 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!solve and graph the following equation and interpet the result:
2x-3y=6 and 2x+y=-10.
----------------------
solve both equation for "y":
y = (2/3)x-2
y = -2x-10
-------------
Graph y = (2/3)x-2
If x = 0, y = -2
If x = 3, y = 0
Plot the two points and draw a line thru them.

-------------------
Graph y = -2x-10
If x = 0, y = -10
If x = 1, y = -12
Plot the two points and draw a line thru them.

---------------------
Graphing them on the same set of axes you might see
the lines cross at (-3,-4); this is the solution for
the system of two equations. It is the common solution.

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/131478: This question is from textbook
It takes a motorboat 4 hours to travel 56 miles down a river, and 3 hours longer to make the return trip. Find the speed of the river current. 1 solutions
Answer 95964 by stanbon(57290) on 2008-03-11 10:35:35 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!It takes a motorboat 4 hours to travel 56 miles down a river, and 3 hours longer to make the return trip. Find the speed of the river current.
----------------
Downstream DATA:
Time = 4 hr ; distance = 56 miles ; rate = d/t = 56/4 = 14 mph
---------------
Upstream DATA:
Time = 7 hr ; distance = 56 miles ; rate = d/t = 56/7 = 8 mph
--------------
Let boat speed be "b"; Let water speed be "w"
--------------
EQUATIONS:
b+w = 14
b-w = 8
Add to get:
2b = 22
b = 11 mph (boat speed in still water)
Substitute to get water speed:
11+w = 14
w = 3 mph (water speed)
