Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/133041: Could someone show me how to solve this equation using the subsitution method?
5x%2B2y=-2
x=26-7y
1 solutions

Answer 97261 by stanbon(57219) About Me  on 2008-03-20 22:42:04 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
5x+2y=-2
x=26-7y
-------------
Substitute the value of x in the 2nd equation into the 1st equation:
5(26-7y)+2y = -2
130-35y+2y = -2
-33y = -132
y = 132/33
------------------
Substitute that into x = 26-7y to solve for "x":
x = 26-7(132/33)
x = 858/33 - 924/33
x = -66/33 = -2
===================
Solution: (-2,(132/33))

It depends on your text, but frequently "n" means "number of elements in".
Your Problem:
A and B = "the null set" because there are no elements common to A and B.
Therefore n(A and B) = 0

It means the diagonal measurement is 20 in or 25 in.

A 15-in TV set also has a width of 12-inches. What is its height?
Use Pythagoras to get:
height^2 + width^2 = diagonal^2
h^2 + 12^2 = 15^2
h^2 = 225-144
h^2 = 89
h = 9.43 inches

---------------------
Could you identify your favorite brand in this kind of test?
Probably not since this test group was wrong in their identification
32 out of 46 times.

Since it is a 2x2 table, try also a two tailed two sample z test for p1= p2 and verify that z2 is the same as your chi-square statistic.

Conclusion: Since the test statistic is between -1.96 and +1.96, Fail to Reject Ho.
The proportions are the same.

Find the critical value of chi-square,
Left margin = 0.001; Right margin is 7.879

p-value for the test statistic = 2P(z > 0.015056...) = 98.8%
Interpret the p-value: 98.8% of the test results could have
provided stronger evidence to reject Ho..
Is the conclusion sensitive to the level of significance chosen?
Not when the p-value is as large as 98.9%

Which test do you prefer? Why?
The Chi-Sq is much easier to run and interpret.

Write the answer in standard for using only integers as the coefficients.
the line through (-2,0) with slope -3/4
----------------
Form: y = mx + b
You know x,y, and m; solve for "b":
0 = (-3/4)*(-2) + b
0 = (3/2) + b
b = -3/2
----------------
EQuATION:
y = (-3/4)x -(3/2)
Multiplythru by 4 to get:
4y = -3x - 6
Rearrange:
3x+4y = -6

Probability-and-statistics/132907: This question is from textbook Applied Statistics in Business and Economics
Does lovastatin (a cholesterol-lowering drug) reduce the risk of heart attack? In a Texas study, researchers gave lovastatin to 2,325 people and an inactive substitute to 2,081 people (average age 58). After 5 years, 57 of the lovastatin group had suffered a heart attack, compared with 97 for the inactive pill. (a) State the appropriate hypotheses. (b) Obtain a test statistic and p-value. Interpret the results at α = .01. (c) Is normality assured? (d) Is the difference large enough to be important? (e) What else would medical researchers need to know before prescribing this drug widely?

x+7y=7}}}
x%2B7y=7%7D%7D%7D%0D%0Ax=4-7y
------------
substitute the value of "x" in the 2nd equation into the 1st to get:
4-7y+7y=7
4 = 7
----------
This happened because I assumed the x and y in the one equation
were the same as the x and y in the other.
That assumption lead to the contradiction.
The system of equation is said to be inconsistent.
There is no solution.
If you graph the two equation you will get two parallel lines.

Solve : 3(2^(2x)) - 2^(x+2) +1=0
3(2^(2x) -[2^x*2^2] + 1 = 0
3(2^2x) -4(2^x] + 1 = 0
-------------
Let 2^x = w
-------------
Rewrite the equation in "w":
3w^2 -4w + 1 = 0
Factor:
(3w-1)(w-1) = 0
w = 1/3 or w = 1
------------------
Rewrite in terms of "x":
2^x = (1/3) or 2^x = 1
x = [log(1/3)]/[log2] or x = [log1]/[log2]
x = -1.58496... or x = 0

domain of a function?
p%28x%29=x%5E2-2x%2B8
---------------
Your domain is "all Real Numbers" because you can put any
Real Number you want to in place of "x".
------------------
You have a restriction on the domain if:
1) you are taking an even root of an expression with a variable in it;
like y = sqrt(x+2)
OR
2) you have a denominator with an expression with a variable in it:
like y = 3/(2x+1)
OR
3) you have a log expression like y = log2(x-3)
---------------
All of these cause you to have a restricted domain.
#1: x must be >= -2
#2: x must not be -1/2
#3: x must be > 3

graph this on a plane?
5x%2B6y%3C30
-------------------
Solve for "Y":
y < (-5/6)x +6
-------------------
Graph the boundary as a dashed line y = (-5/6)x+30
If x=0, y= 30 giving you point (0,30)
If x = 6, y = 25, giving you point (6,25)
---------------------
Plot (0,30) and (6.25) and draw a dashed line thru them.
Note: That is the boundary for the solution; it is not the solution.
-------------
Since you want y LESS THAN (-5/6)x+30, shade the half-plane
BELOW the boundary line. That is the graph of the inequality.

Robin, one ear pressed against the railroad track, hears a sound through the rail six seconds before hearing the same sound through the air. To the nearest foot, how far away is the source of that sound?
---------------
Time difference = 6 seconds
-----------------------
Rail DATA:
Distance = x ft ; Rate = 16,500 ft/sec ; Time = d/r = x/16500 sec
----------------
Air DATA:
Distance = x ft ; Rate = 11000 ft/sec ; Time = d/r = x/11000 sec
-----------------
EQUATION:
air time - rail time = 6 seconds
x/11000 - x/16500 = 6
(16500x - 11000x) = 6(11000*16500)
5500x = 6*11000*16500
x = 198,000 ft.(distance the train was when it initiated the sound heard
by Robin)

----------
If the discriminant is negative you get two distinct complex solutions.
---------------------
y = x^2+x+1
x = [-1 +- sqrt(1-4*1*1)]/2
x = (-1 + sqrt(-3))/2 or x = (-1-sqrt(-3))/2
x = (-1+isqrt(3))/2 or x = (-1-isqrt(3))/2

2 lbs = 2*16 = 32 oz

x grams/ 32 oz = 140 gr/5 oz
x = 32[140/5]
x = 896 grams
