You can put this solution on YOUR website!The manager at Cream of the Crop bought a load of watermelons for $200. She priced the melons so that she would make $1.50 profit for each melon. When all but 30 had been sold, the manager had recovered her initial investment. How many did she buy originally?
------------------------------
Let the original number bought be "x".
----------------
Average cost of each melon was $(200/x)
----------------
She priced the melons so that she would make $1.50 profit for each melon.
Let her price per melon be "p".
EQUATION:
p = (200/x) + 1.5
-----------------------
When all but 30 had been sold, the manager had recovered her initial investment.
EQUATION:
p(x-30) = 200
------------------------
Rearrange the two equations:
p = (200/x) + 1.5
p = 200/(x-30)
---------------------
Substitute to solve for "x".
200/(x-30) = (200/x) + 1.5
Multiply thru by x(x-30) to get:
200x = 200(x-30) + 1.5x(x-30)
6000 = 1.5x^2 - 45x
x^2 - 30x -4000 = 0
(x- 80)(x+50) = 0
Positive solution
x = 80 (original number of melons)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!At its Grand Opening, the Guthrie Market distributed two different types of souveniers.
----------------------------------------
One type cost 20cents each, and the other type cost 25 cents each.
Value equation: 20x + 25y = 22000
----------------------------------------
One thousand souveniers were distributed in all. If the cost of these souveniers was $220. how many of each type were distributed?
----------------------------
Quantity equation: x + y = 1000
------------------------------------
System:
20x + 25y = 22000
x + y = 1000
----------------------
Multiply the 2nd equation by 20 to get:
20x + 25y = 22000
20x + 20y = 20000
--------------------
Subtract 2nd from 1st to get:
5y = 2000
y = 400 (# of 25 cent souvenirs)
--------------
Since x+y = 1000, x = 600 (# of 20 cent souvenirs)

Please talk me through this. I have quite a few examples of how to solve it, it's just that instead of an addition sign theres a subtraction sign and it's confusing my dumb little mind. 1 solutions
Answer 112749 by stanbon(57347) on 2008-08-24 15:39:16 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!9x-2y=-47
8x+48=y
------------
Rearrange to use elimination:
9x - 2y = -47
8x - y = -48
-----------------
Now the objective is to have the same number of x's or y's in both equations.
So, multiply the 2nd equation by 2 and rewrite the system.
-----------------
9x - 2y = -47
16x -2y = -96
==============
Subtract the 1st equation from the 2nd to get:
7x = -49
x = -7
-----------------
Substitute into 8x+48=y to solve for "y":
y = 8*-7 + 48
y = -56 + 48
y = -7
-------------
Final solution: (-7,-7)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!A) Write the sentence (-x)^2 is not equal to -x^2 in words.
The square of negative x is not equal to the negative of x squared.
-----------
In your own words explain why (-x)2 and -x2 are not equivalent. Provide an example to support your explanation.
In the 1st you are squaring -x. In the 2nd you are forming the negative
of the square of x.
Ex: (-5)^2 is not equal to -5^2
25 is not equal to -25
---------------------------------
B) Evaluate (a) 3x0 and (b) (3x)0 when x is not 0.
Are the results different?
3x^0 = 3*1 = 3
(3x)^0 = 1
Ans: Yes, they are different.
---------------
If so, explain in your own words why they are different. If not, then state so.
In the 1st you are multiply x^0 by 3 to get 3*1 = 3
In the 2st you are raising (3x) to the zero power to get 1
---------------------------------
A student writes down the following as part of her response:
a ) 3(to the 2nd power) times 3(to the 3rd power) = 729.
Ans: 3^2 * 3*3 = 3^5 = 243
The student is wrong.
-------------------------------
and b) 3(to the negative 2nd power) = -9.
Are her answers correct?
Ans: 3^(-2)= (3^2)^-1 = 9^-1 = 1/9
The student is wrong.
----------------------------
If not, explain why you think her answers are incorrect. Include in your explanation what she did wrong, if any. What would you advise her to do instead?

-------------------------
A(t) = Ao(1/2)^(t/4.2 mil)
This says "the amount at time t A(t) is the amount you start with (Ao)
multiplied by (1/2) (t/4.2 mil) times.
-------------
0.076Ao = Ao*(1/2)^(t/4.2 mil)
0.076 = (1/2)^(t/4.2 mil)
Take the log of both sides to get:
log 0.076 = (t/4.2 mil)*log(1/2)
t/4.2 mil = log0.076/log0.5
t = 4.2 mil * 3.717857...
t = 15.614998.. million years old.

Exponential-and-logarithmic-functions/153160: Hi
How would I solve the following: Exponent and logarithm as function of power
True or false: The function "f(x) = 3x" grows three times faster than the function "g(x) = x". Explain. I got two different answer when I tried to solve this logarithm. Can you please help me.
Answer: False.
If x = 3 it would make f(3)=3 * 3 =9 and g(3)=3
If x = 4 then f(4)=12 and g(4)=4
if x=5 then f(5)=15 and g(5)=5
although f(x) is 3 times greater than g(x) the growth of f(x) is not 3 times faster than g(x) because from 9 the change of f(x) is only 3 and from 12 it only changed by 3 again. wherein it should have incurred a change of 9. If f(x) grows three times faster than g(x) the equation should be f(x)=x raise to the 3rd power and g(x)=x.
Answer is True
The question is on rate of growth, ie slope.
slope of g(x) is 1.
slope of f(x) is 3.

Answer 112695 by stanbon(57347) on 2008-08-24 09:03:25 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!1st: This is not a logarithm problem
2nd: When you say " it should have grown by 9 " you are
pointing to the fact that when x increased from 0 to 3
f(x) increased from 0 to 9.
That is true.
But, if x had increased from 0 to 1 f(x) would have increased
by only 3. Similarly for x increasing from 1 to 2, then from
2, to 3. So for each increase in x by one f(x) increases by 3.
That is a description of the slope; and the slope is the rate
of growth for a linear function.

Quadratic-relations-and-conic-sections/153157: I'm not sure the answer I got for this is right.
Find the vertex and axis of symmetry of the following parabola.
f(x) = x^2 - 6x + 11
My work:
(-3) ^2
y = (x-3)^2 + 11 - 9
y = (x-3)^2 +2
a = 1
h =3
k = 2
Vertex : (3,2)
No asymptotes
Can anyone tell me if this is correct and point me in the right direction if it isn't?
Thanks! 1 solutions

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Find the vertex and axis of symmetry of the following parabola.
f(x) = x^2 - 6x + 11
x^2-6x+9 = y - 11 + 9
(x-3)^2 = y-2
---------------
Axis of symmetry at x = 3
Vertex: (3,2)

Graphs/153158: Please help!!!
A ball is thrown upward with an initial speed of 50ft/sec. It's height after t seconds is given by h=50t - 16t^2.
A) What is the height of the ball after 1.3 seconds?
B) When does the ball hit the ground?
For A, the answer I worked out is 37.96 feet.
For B, I worked out 25/8 seconds = t, which doesn't seem right. Can anyone help?
Thank you!!!! 1 solutions

That is correct.
---------------------------
B) When does the ball hit the ground?
Let h = 0.
0 = 50t -16t^2
Factor to get:
2t(25 - 8t) = 0
t = 0 or t = 25/8 sec.
Comment: that tells you the ball is on the ground at the beginning
and is back on the ground after 25/8 = 3 1/8 seconds.
------------------------
For B, I worked out 25/8 seconds = t, which doesn't seem right. Can anyone help?
You are correct

Ans: low = 9
Q1 = 16
median = 20
Q3 = 26
max = 32
---------------------------
b) calculate the IQR..
IQR = (Q3 - Q1) = 26 - 16 = 10

Probability-and-statistics/153080: can some one please help me with this i do not even know how to get started with this.
consumer reports stated that the mean time for a chrysler concorde to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour was 8.7 seconds.
a) if you want to set up a statistical test to challenge the claim of 8.7 seconds what would you use for the null hypothesis? AM I CORRECT WHEN THIS ANSWER Ho: u = 8.7?
b) the town of leadville, colorado, has an elevation over 10,000 feet. Suppose you wanted to test the claim that the average time to accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour is longer in leadville ( because of less oxygen). What would you use for the alternate hypothesis? I HOPE THIS IS RIGHT TOO H1 : U> 10,000
C) Suppose you made an engine modification and you think that they average time to accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour has been reduced. What would you use for the alernate hypothesis? NOW THIS IS WHERE I GET CONFUSED. BUT I AM GOING TO TRY IT H1: U< 0 TO 60
d) For each of the tests in parts (b) and (c), would the P-value area be on the left, on the right, or on both sides of the mean> Explain your answer in each case?
This part i do not understand at all?

d) For each of the tests in parts (b) and (c), would the P-value area be on the left, on the right, or on both sides of the mean> Explain your answer in each case?
b) Since the alternate is "greater than" the p-value is on the right.
c) Since the alternate is "less than" the p-value is on the left.
