Paul jogged half as many miles (mi) as Lucy and 7 less than Isaac. If the three ran a total of 23 miles, how far did each of them run?
-------------
Equations:
p = (1/2) L
p = I - 7
p + I + L = 23
-----------------
Rearrange:
p + 0 - (1/2)L = 0
p - I + 0 = -7
p + I + L = 23

Solve the system by any means you know to get:
p = 4 miles
I = 11 miles
L = 8 miles

Another way to find the solution:
Equations:
p = (1/2) L
p = I - 7
p + I + L = 23
---------------
Rearrange to get:
L = 2p
I = p+7
Equations:
p = (1/2) L
p = I - 7
p + I + L = 23
----
Substitute into p + I + L = 23 to get:
p + p+7 + 2p = 23
4x + 7 = 23
4x = 16
p = 4 miles (paul)
L= 2p = 8 miles (Lucy)
I= p + 7 = 4+7 = 11 miles (Isaac)

1. A student pilot was required to fly to an airport and then return.
The average speed on the way to the airport was 115mph, and the average speed returning was 172.5mph.
Find the distance between the two airports if the total flying time was 5 hrs.
------------------------------
To DATA:
rate = 115 mph ; distance = x miles ; time = d/r = x/115 hrs
----------------------------
From DATA:
rate = 172.5 mph ; distance = x miles ; time = d/r = x/172.5 hrs
----------------------------
Equation:
time + time = 5 hrs.
x/115 + x/172.5 = 5
(172.5x + 115x) = 115*172.5*5
287.5x = 115*172.5*5
x = 345 miles (distance between the airports)

The wrong way:
2x^2-32/x-4 as 2x-8/x-4 =2x-8
Example:
Let x = 2
You would get 2*4-32 /2-4 = 2*2-8
8-32/-2 = 4-8
-24/-2 = -4
12 = -4
Which is wrong.

The Right way:
(2x^2-32)/(x-4)

(2*4-32)/(2-4) = 2(2+4)
(8-32)/-2 = 2(6)
-24/-2 = 12
12 = 12
Which is correct.

Angles/174153: One angle in triangle FMU is one hundred eighty degrees. The difference between the measures of the other two angles is one degrees. What is the measure of each angle in triangle FMU?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You cannot have a 180 degree angle in a triangle.
The sum of the angles is always 180 but no one
angle can be 180.

----------------
h(t) = vt-16t^2
3 = 15t - 16t^2
16t^2 - 15t + 3 = 0
----
Use the Quadratic formula to solve for "t":
t = [15 +- sqrt(225 - 4*16*3)]/32
t = [15 +- sqrt(33)]/32
t = [15 + sqrt(33)]/32 = 0.64827 seconds
or
t = [15 - sqrt(33)]/32 = 0.28923 seconds

A circular pool has a radius r. It is surrounded by a path which is 2 metres wide. Work out a formula for the area of the path and give its area when r=2.5 metres.
----------------------
Procedure: Draw the picture including the path around the circular pool.
Subtract the area of the pool from the area of the pool with its path.
That gives you the area of the path.
-------------------------
Area of the pool alone = pi*r^2 = pi*2.5^2 = 6.25pi sq meters
------------------------
Radius of the pool/path combination = r+2 meters
Area of the pool/path combination = pi*(2.5+2)^2 = 20.25pi sq. meters.
--------------------------
Formula:
Area of path = Area of pool/path - Area of pool
Area of path = [pi*(r+2)^2 - pi*r^2
----------------------------------------------
Your Answer:
Area of path = [20.25pi - 6.25pi] sq. meters
Area of path = 14pi sq meters
