------------------------------------
You have two points: (0,73.9), which is the y-intercept,
and (6,76.4).
----
Find the slope:
m = (76.4-73.9)/(6-0) = 2.5/6 = 5/12
=============
Equation:
E(t) = (5/12)t + 73.9
------------------
The linear function E(t) that fits the data is
E(t) = (5/12)t+ 73.9
(round to the nearest tenth.)
Use the function to predict the life expectancy of males in 2003.
E(9) = (5/12)*9 + 73.9 = 77.65
(round to the nearest tenth)
E(9) = 77.7 years.

An adjustable water sprinkler that sprays water in a circular pattern is placed at the center of a square field whose area is 1250 square feet. What is the shortest radius setting that can be used if the field is to be completely enclosed within the circle?
---------------
Draw the picture.
A side of the square is sqrt(1250)
--------------------------------------
The diagonal of the square is
sqrt(1250 + 1250) = sqrt(2500) = 50
-------------------------------------
The shortest radius from the center of the square
to the corners of the square is 50/2 = 25 ft.

Find the point of intersection of each pair of lines.
b) 4x+2y=7
-x-y=6
----------------
Leave the 1st equation along;
Multiply the 2nd equation by 4.
----------------------------------
4x + 2y = 7
-4x- 4y = 24
------------------
Add the two equations to eliminate the x-terms:
-2y = 31
y = -31/2
---------------
Substitute into -x-y = 6 to solve for "x":
-x -(-31/2) = 6
x + 31/2 = 12/2
x = -19/2

A coin bank contains nickels, dimes, and quarters totaling $5.45. If there are twice as many quarters as dimes and 11 more nickels than quarters, how many of each coin are in the bank?
--------------------------------------
Value Equation: 5n + 10d + 25q = 545 cents
Quantity Eq...: q = 2d
Quantity Eq...: n = q + 11
-------------------------------------------
Rearrange the 2nd equation:
d = (1/2)q
-------------------------------------------
Substitute to solve for "q":
5(q+11) + 10(1/2)q + 25q = 545
5q + 55 + 5q + 25q = 545
35q = 490
q = 14 (# of quarters)
-------------
Since n = q + 11, n = 25 (# of nickels)
Since d = (1/2)q, d = 7 (# of dimes)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Find a quadratic function F(x)=ax^2+bx+c for each parabola described.
maximum value 6 when x=-2; one zero is 1
---------------------------------------------
Maximum occurs when x = -b/2a
So, you have -b/2a = -2
b = 4a
-----------
Substitute and you have
f(x) = ax^2 +(4a)x + c
-----
Then f(-2) = 4a -8a + c = 6
c = 4a + 6
-------------------
Substitute to get:
f(x) ax^2 +(4a)x + 4a + 6
----------------------------
Then f(1) = a + 4a + 4a + 6 = 1
9a + 6 = 1
9a = -5
a = -5/9
---
b = 4a = -20/9
---
c = 4a+6 = -20/9 + 54/9 = 34/9
-----------------------------------
Equation:
y = (-5/9)x^2 -(20/9)x + (34/9)

Return-trip DATA:
time = 6 hrs : rate = x-4 mph ; distance = rt = 6(x-4) miles

Explain why shifting the decimal point in a number is equivalent to multiplying or dividing a number by a power of ten.
--------------
Numbers in the decimal system are a sum of multiples of powers of ten.
The digit to the left of a numerical digit is a multiple of the next
higher power of ten.
So multiplying a number by 10 moves each digit one position to the left.
In effect that means the decimal point moves one position to the right.

The length of a picture is 1 inch less than twice its width. The frame around the picture has a uniform width of 2 inches and an area of 96 square inches. What are the dimensions of the picture?
------------------------
Draw the picture of a rectangle inside a rectangle.
-------------------------
Label the length and the width of the inner rectangle.
Let width = w
Then length= 2w - 1
Area of the inner rectangle = w(2w-1) = 2w^2-w sq. in.
---
Label the length and width of the outer rectangle.
Width is w + 4 inches
Length is 2w-1+4 = 2w +3 inches
Area of the outer rectangle = (w+4)(2w+3) = 2w^2+7w+12 sq. in.
---------------------------------------------
Area of the picture = outer rectangle area - inner rectangle area
96 = 2w^2+7w+12 -(2w^2-w)
8w + 12 = 96
2w + 3 = 24
2w = 21
w = 21/2 inches (width of the picture)
L = 2w-1 = 21-1 = 20 (length of picture)

-------------------------------------------------------
Equation:
gold + gold = gold
(3/4)x + (5/12)(6-x) = (2/3)*6
Multiply thru by 12 to get:
9x + 5(6-x) = 8*6
9x + 5*6 - 5x = 8*6
4x = 3*6
x = 9/2 = 4 1/2 oz (amt. of (3/4) pure gold in the mixture)
6-x = 6 - 4 1/2 = 1 1/2 oz (amt of (5/12) pure gold in the mixture)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A jet plane traveling at 500 mph overtakes a propeller plane traveling at 200 mph that had a 2-hour head start. How far from the starting point are the planes?
---------------------
Jet DATA:
rate = 500 mph ; time = x-2 hrs. ; distance = rt = 500(x-2) miles
-----------------------
Propeller DATA:
rate = 200 mph ; time = x hrs. ; distance = rt = 200x miles
---------------------
Equation:
distance = distance
500(x-2) = 200x
500x - 1000 = 200x
300x = 1000
x = 3 1/3 hrs (time the propeller plane flew before being overtaken)
Propeller distance = 200x = 200*(10/3) = 666.67 miles

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(sqrt 18)/(2isqrt 6)
= 3sqrt(2)/2isqrt(6)
What you do now depends on the statement of the problem.
You could multiply numerator and denominator by -2isqrt(6)
---
If you want to do that you would get:
= [(3sqrt(2)(-2isqrt(6)] / (-4i^2*6)
= [-6isqrt(12)] / (24)
= [-6*2isqrt(3)]/24
= [-isqrt(3)/2]

Differentiate the function. Do not expand any expression before differentiating:
Use the chain rule as follows:
a) f(x)=[(2-x)^4+16]^3
f'(x) = 3[(2-x)^4+16]^2 * 4(2-x)^3 * (-1)
---------------------
b) f(x)=1/((x^2)-16)^5
f(x) = ((x^2)-16)^-5
f'(x) = -5[((x^2)-16)^-4]

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Toni can be paid in one of two ways:
a) a salary of $400 per month, plus a commission of 8% of gross sales
A(x) = 400 + 0.08x where x is Toni's sales for a month.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
b) a salary of $610 per month, plus a commission of 5% of gross sales
B(x) = 610 + 0.05x
---------------------------
For what amount of gross sales should Toni select plan A?
A(x) > B(x)
400 + 0.08x > 610 + 0.05x
0.03x > 210
x > $7000.00
A will be a better salary if Toni's monthly salary is greater than $7000.

How many pounds of hamburger that costs $1.60 per pound must be mixed with 70 pounds of hamburger that costs $2.10 per pound to make a mixture that costs $1.70 per pound.
------------------------------
Equation:
value + value = value
1.6x + 2.1*70 = 1.7(x+70)
Multiply thru by 10 to get:
16x + 21*70 = 17x + 17*70
x = 4*70
x = 280 lbs. (amt. of $1.60 hamburger in needed in the mixture)
