A discount store sold plastic cups for 3.50 and each ceramic cups for 4 dollars each. If 400 cups were sold for a total of $1,458, how many cups of each type were sold ? what is the dollar value of each type of cup sold
-------------------------------------------
Equations:
Quantity: p + c = 400
Value: 3.5p +4c = 1458
----------------------------
Multiply thru the 1st equation by 4 to set up the system for elimination:
4p + 4c = 1600
3.5p+4c = 1458
--------------------
Subtract 2nd Eq. from 1st to get:
0.5p= 142
p = 284 (# of plastic cups sold)
dollar value = 3.5*284 = $994.00
--------------------
Substitute into p+c=400 to solve for "c":
284 + c = 400
c = 116 (# of ceramic cups sold)
dollar value = $464

How do you find the angle's measure is 70 more than that of it's complement? I know the answer is 80, but how do you find the answer?
--------
Let the angle be "x".
Then its complement is "90-x"
------------------------------
EQUALITY:
angle - complement = 70
x - (90-x) = 70
2x - 90 = 70
2x = 160
x = 80

When examining the graphs of logarithmic functions, for what value(s) x is it not possible to determine log(x)? Explain your reasoning.
---------------------------------------------------------------
The log function is undefined for all x < 0.
The log is an exponent of a base used to express positive numbers.
Powers of a positive base connot express negative numbers,
so logs are not defined for negative numbers.
The exponent (log) can be negative but the antilog cannot be negative.

For the function y= (x-5)(x+3)(8x-2), its y-intercept is y= ?
its x-intercepts are x= 5,-3,and (1/4)
----------------------------------------
To find ANY y-intercept, let x=0.
You get:
y = (-5)(3)(-2) = 30

Use composition of functions to prove that it does matter what order you use these discounts at the store to get the greatest toal discount. The coupons are for $25 and 40% discount on your total purchase price.
------------------
Let f(x) = x-25
Let g(x) = 0.75x
=======================
f[g(x)] = f[0.75x] = 0.75x-25
g[f(x)] = g[x-25] = = 0.75(x-25) = 0.75x-18.75
----------------------------------------------------
Evaluate if x = $100
f[g(100)] = 0.75*100-25 = $50
g[f(100)] = 0.75*100-18.75 = $56.25

If Sally can paint a house in 4 hours, and John can paint the same house in 6 hour, how long will it take for both of them to paint the house together?
--------------------------------
Sally DATA:
time = 4 hrs/job ; rate = 1/4 job/hr
--------------------------------------
John DATA:
time = 6 hrs/job ; rate = 1/6 job/hr
-------------------------------------
Together DATA:
time = x hrs/job ; rate = 1/x job/hr
=========================================
Equation:
rate + rate = together rate
1/4 + 1/6 = 1/x
3x + 2x = 12
x = 12/5 = 2.4 hrs (time for them to do the job together)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
N(t)=3t^3 + 23^t2 - 8t.
N(t) = t(3t^2 + 23t - 8)
N(t) = t(3t^2 +24t-t-8)
N(t) = t(3t(t+8) - (t+8))
N(t) = t(t+8)(3t-1)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Hope the additional explanation is helpful.
Let me know if there are statements you do
not understand.
---------------------------
A baseball player hits a homerun on the average of once every 12 times at bat. Use the idea of independent trials to answer the following questions.
---

If he bats 5 times in a game, what is the probability he will hit exactly one home run?
It's binomial with n=5, p = 1/12, x = 1
If you use a TI calculator you get binompdf(5,12^-1,1) = 0.2942
--------
If you do not have a TI: P(x=1) = 5C1(1/12)^1(11/12)^4
= 5*(1/12)(0.70607) = 0.2942
------------------------------------------
If he comes to bat 5 times, what is the probability he will hit at least one home run?
P(at least one) = 1 - P(no home runs) = 1-binompdf(5,12^-1,0) = 0.3528
OR
P(at least one) = 1-P(no home runs) = 1 - 5C0(1/12)^0(11/12)^5
= 1 - 1*1* = 1-0.6472 = 0.3528
------------------------------------------
If he comes to bat 5 times in a game, what is the expected value for the number of home runs he will hit?
E(x) = np = 5(1/12) = 5/12

Equations/190302: hi.
i need some help in performing this indicated operation and simplifying it:
a^2 - a - 20/a^2 - 16 divided by a-5
thanks!
1 solutions

Answer 142839 by stanbon(57347) About Me  on 2009-04-09 09:08:03 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a^2 - a - 20/a^2 - 16 divided by a-5
-------------
Factor where you can to get:
= [(a-5)(a+4)]/[(a-4)(a+4)]/(a-5)
Invert the denominator and multiply to get:
= [(a-5)(a+4)]/[(a-4)(a+4)]
Cancel factors that are common to a numerator and a denominator
such as (a+4), (a-5)
= [1/(a-4)]

Linear_Algebra/190317: This question is from textbook algebra and trigonometry structure and method book 2
The stretch on a wire under a given tension varies directly as the length of the wire and inversely as the square of its diameter. A wire having length 2m and diameter 1.5mm stretches 1.2 mm. If a second wire of the same material(and under the same tension) has length 3m and diameter 2.0mm, find the amount of stretch.
Please help as i keep on messing the decimals up and can't seem to get the right answer. Please explain also. thank you!

Answer 142837 by stanbon(57347) About Me  on 2009-04-09 08:58:17 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The stretch on a wire under a given tension varies directly as the length of the wire and inversely as the square of its diameter.
stretch = k[L/d^2]
------------------------------
A wire having length 2m and diameter 1.5mm stretches 1.2 mm.
1.2 = k[2/1.5^2]
1.2 = k[8/9]
k = (9/8)1.2
k = 27/20
So the equation for your problem is stretch = (27/20)[L/d^2]
---------
If a second wire of the same material(and under the same tension) has length 3m and diameter 2.0mm, find the amount of stretch.
stretch = (27/20)[3/2^2] = 1.0125
