You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a canned juice drink is 15% ans another juice is 5%
How many liters of each would it take to make it 10L that is 13% juice?
----------------------
Equations:
Quantity Eq: canned + other = 10L
Juice Eq::: 0.15c + 0.05t = 0.13*10
-----------------------------
Substitute for c (or for t) to solve:
0.15c + (0.05)(10-c) = 0.13*10
Multiply thru by 100 to get:
15c + 5(10-c) = 13*10
15c + 50 - 5c = 130
10c = 80
c = 8L (amt. of canned juice drink needed in the mixture)
Then "other" = 10-8 = 2L (amt. of 5% juice needed in the mix)

Since the beginning of the month, a local reservoir has been losing water at a constant rate.

On the 13th of the month the reservoir held 454 million gallons of water, and on the 21st it held only 191 million gallons.
How much water was in the reservoir on the 10th of the month?
-----------------------
You have two points relating day and amount of water: (13,454)and(21,191)
---
Equation form is amt = (slope)(day)+ b
slope = (191-454)/(21-13) = -263/8
-----------
to get the intercept:
191 = (-263/8)21 + b
b = 499.375
-------------
Equation:
Amt(day) = (-263/8)(day) + 499.375
---
How much water was in the reservoir on the 10th of the month?
A(10) = (-263/8)(10) + 499.375
A(10) = 170.625 gallons

Equations/209438: i was assigned this word problem, can you help me solve it? please and thank you.
july 4th 1876, was america's 100th birthday. all members of the family decided to get together for a great family picnic.
when they started off for the picnic grounds, ever wagon they owned was pressed into service. each wagon carried the same number of people.
halfway to the grounds 10 wagons broke down, so it was necessary for the remaining wagons to carry one more person. when they started for home it was discovered that 15 more wagons were out of commission. so in the return trip there were three persons more in each wagon that when they started out in the morning.
the question is: how many people attended the great family picnic?
the paper give you a hint, it says: here's how you might start:
let x = number of people per wagon when they started.
let y = number of wagons when they started
write two equations with x and y, then solve the system. (you'll find that the "xy" terms cancel.)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
every wagon they owned was pressed into service.
each wagon carried the same number of people.
-------------
Starting number of people is xy
-----------------------
halfway to the grounds 10 wagons broke down, so it was necessary for the remaining wagons to carry one more person.
xy = (x+1)(y-10)
xy = xy+y-10x-10
y-10x-10 = 0
y - 10x = 10
---------------------------------
when they started for home it was discovered that 15 more wagons were out of commission. so in the return trip there were three persons more in each wagon that when they started out in the morning.
xy = (x+3)(y-25)
xy = xy+3y-25x-75
3y - 25x = 75
----------------------------------
Solve this system of equations:
y - 10x = 10
3y -25x = 75
------------------
Substitute y = 10x+10 into 3y-25x = 75 to solve for "x":
3(10x+10) -25x = 75
30x + 30 -25x = 75
5x = 45
x = 9 (# of people per wagon)
---
Substitute into y = 10x+10 to solve for "y":
y = 10*9 + 10 = 100 (# of wagons at the start)
==========================================================

the question is: how many people attended the great family picnic?
# at the picnic = xy = 9*100 = 900

(81a^12 b^16)^-1/2
-------------------------
The exponent has two instructions:
#1: the negative means "invert"
#2: the 1/2 means "take the square root"
-----------------------------
You may do the instructions in any order and get the same answer:
--------------------------------------
So,
Take the square root and you get:
(9*a^6*b^8)^-1

Now,
Invert to get:
1/(9a^6 * b^8)

-----------------------
Harry DATA:
distance = 300 miles ; rate = (x+10) mph ; time = d/r = 300/(x+10) hrs
----------------------------------------
Equation:
Harry time - Gary time = 1 hr
300/(x+10) - 300/x = 1
300x - 300(x+10) = x(x+10)
-3000 = x^2+10x
x^2 + 10x - 3000 = 0
Factor the Quadratic:
(x+60)(x-50) = 0
Positive solution:
x = 50 mph (Gary's rate)
x+10 = 60 mph (Harry's rate)

90 = 30t + 20
70 = 30t
t = 7/3
t = 2 1/3

how is this problem factored.
3xy^2+11xy-20x

Think of two numbers whose product is 3*-120 = -60
and whose sum or difference is 11
----------------
The numbers are 15 and 4
-------------------------------
Rewrite the problem:
x(3y^2 + 11y - 20)
x(3y^2 + 15y - 4y - 20)
x(3y(y+5)-4(y+5))
x(y+5)(3y-4)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
3^(a-b) = 1/9
3^(a+b) = 9
then a = ?
--------------------
3^(a-b) = 3^-2
3^(a+b) = 3^2
-------------------
a-b = -2
a+b = 2
---------
Adding you get:
2a = 0
a = 0

Expressions-with-variables/209399: I need help with the following quetion : A firefighter spraying water on a fire stood on the middle of the ladder. When the smoke became less thick the firefighter moved up 4 rungs. However it got too hot, so the firefighter backed down 6 rungs. Later the firefighter went up 7 rungs and stayed until the fire was out. Then the firefighter climbed the remaining 4 rungs and entered the building. How many rungs did the ladder have ?
I did try to work out this problem using a diagram, but im not sure if the answer is right.

---------------
start at rung "h" which is half way up the ladder
Then Add 4; then subtract 6, so he is at h-2
Then Add 7 ; then add 4, so he is at h-2+11 = h+9.
If that is the top of the ladder(?), the bottom
of the ladder is at h-9 so there are 18 + 1 = 19 rungs

Linear-systems/209333: if possible, find the solution of y=x+2z,z=-1-2x and x=y-14

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
find the solution of y=x+2z,z=-1-2x and x=y-14
------------------------
Rearrange:
x - y + 2z = 0
2x + 0 + z = -1
x - y + 0 = -14
--------------------------
I used a matrix method to get the following:
x = -4
y = 10
z = 7

Linear_Equations_And_Systems_Word_Problems/209390: If 8 people can pack 60 cartons in 2 hours how many carton will 3 people pack in 2 hours
1 solutions

Answer 158320 by stanbon(57314) About Me  on 2009-08-29 06:41:12 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If 8 people can pack 60 cartons in 2 hours how many carton will 3 people pack in 2 hours
---------------------
# of people and time are inversely related; people and cartons are directly related
p = kc/t
---
Find "k":
8 = k*60/2
k= 8/30 = 4/15
---
So p = (4/15)c/t
----
how many carton will 3 people pack in 2 hours
3 = (4/15)c/2
(4/15)c = 6
c = 15*6/4
c = 22.5 cartons
