Square both sides to get:
x -2sqrt[x(x-5)] + x-5 = 4
2x-5-4 = 2[sqrt(x^2-5x)]
Simplify:
2x-9 = 2[sqrt(x^2-5x)]

Square both sides to get:
4x^2 - 36x + 81 = 4(x^2-5x)
4x^2 - 36x + 81 = 4x^2 - 20x

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Peter delivers 110 newspapers on the weekend. He delivers 20 more papers on Sunday than on Saturday. How many papers does he deliver each day?
-----------------------------
Let number delivered on Saturday be "x".
Then number delivered on Sunday is "x+20".
-----------------
Equation:
x + x+20 = 110
2x + 20 = 110
2x = 90
x = 45 (# he delivers on Saturday)
x+20 = 65 (# he delivers on Sunday)

Graphs/235686: Please find the vertex, y intercept and x intercept and graph the following equation: x^2 + 8x + 7 = 1 solutions

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Please find the vertex, y intercept and x intercept and graph the following equation: x^2 + 8x + 7 = y
-------------------
Vertex occurs where x = -b/2a = -8/2 = -4
f(-4) = (-4)^2+8(-4)+7 = 16-32+7 = -9
So vertex is (-4,-9)
----------------------------
y-intercept at f(0) = 7

x-intercepts when y = 0:
x^2+8x+7 = 0
(x+7)(x+1) = 0
x = -7 or x = -1
Those are the x-intercepts.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!A man did a job for $360. It took him 6 hours longer than he expected and therefore he earned $2 per hour less than he anticipated. How long did he expect that it would take to do the job?
--------
Let the time he expected to use be "x" hrs.
-------------------------------------------------
He received 360/(x+6) dollars per hour.
---------------
He expected to make 360/x dollars per hour
-------------------
Equation:
Expected rate - received rate = 2 dollars
360/x - 360/(x+6) = 2
Multiply thru by x(x+6) to get:
360(x+6) - 360x = 2x(x+6)
2x^2 + 12x - 360*6 = 0
x^2 + 6x - 1080 = 0
(x-30)(x+36) = 0

Answer 173449 by stanbon(57972) on 2009-11-05 12:33:54 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Area = 35sq ft and Perimeter = 27 ft. Solve for Length in the Perimeter.
-----------
Area = LW
Perimeter = 2(L+W)
------------------------
Substitute and solve:
35 = LW
27 = 2(L+W)
----------------
L = 35/W
------
Substitute into the Perimeter equation and solve for W:
13.5 = (35/W)+ W
Multiply thru by W and solve:
W^2 -13.5W + 35 = 0
W = [13.5 +- sqrt(13.5^2-4*1*35)]/2
W = [13.5 +- sqrt(42.25)]/2
Positive solution:
W = 20/2 = 10 ft. (the width of the rectangle)
L+W = 13.5 so L = 3.5 ft. (length of the rectangle)

Trigonometry-basics/235501: if sin 0 = 4/5 and tan 0= 4/3,what is the value of cos 0? 1 solutions
Answer 173443 by stanbon(57972) on 2009-11-05 12:15:41 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!if sin 0 = 4/5 and tan 0= 4/3,what is the value of cos 0?
----------------
If sin and tan are both positive theta is in the 1st quadrant.
If sin(theta) = 4/5, y = 4 and r = 5
Then x = sqrt(4^2+5^2) = sqrt(41) =
---------------
So, cos(theta) = x/r = sqrt(41)/5

Answer 173441 by stanbon(57972) on 2009-11-05 12:11:20 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!What is the accumulated sum of each of the following streams of
payments?
a. $500 a year for 10 years compounded annually at 5 percent
-----------
A(t) = P(1+(r/n))^(nt)
----------------------------
A(10) = 500(1+(0.05/1)^(1*10)
A(10) = 500(1.05)^10
A(10) = 500*1.6289
A(10) = $814.45

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/235470: if 0, 2, -2, 3, and 4-i are zeros of a polynomial with real coefficents, what is the smallest possible degree of the polynomial? 1 solutions
Answer 173424 by stanbon(57972) on 2009-11-05 11:15:00 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!if 0, 2, -2, 3, and 4-i are zeros of a polynomial with real coefficents, what is the smallest possible degree of the polynomial?
-----------
Since the coefficients are Real Numbers, 4+i must also be
a zero of the polynomial.
-----------
Therefore the lowest degree it could have is 6.

Numbers_Word_Problems/235467: How many liters of a 40% solution and an 16% solution must be mixed to obtain 20 liters of a 22% solution? 1 solutions
Answer 173423 by stanbon(57972) on 2009-11-05 11:12:29 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!How many liters of a 40% solution and 16% solution must be mixed to obtain 20 liters of a 22% solution?
-------------------
Equation:
0.40x + 0.16(20-x) = 0.22(20)
---------------------------------
Multiply thru by 100 to get:
40x + 16*20 - 16x = 22*20
24x = 6*20
x = 5 liters (amount of 40% solution needed in the mixture)
---------
20-x = 20-5 = 15 liters (amount of 16% solution needed in the mixture)

Inequalities/235461: Please I need help with this problem:
1. The number of publishers in the usa has increased approximately linearly from 40,964 in 1993 to 73,200 publishers in 2003. Let n be the number of publishers at t years since 1990
(a) find an equation of a linear model to describe the data. (b) what is the slope? what does it mean in this situation? (c) what is the n intercept? what does it mean in this situation?

1. The number of publishers in the usa has increased approximately linearly from 40,964 in 1993 to 73,200 publishers in 2003. Let n be the number of publishers at t years since 1990
---
You have two points (t,n): (3,40,964) and (13,73,200)
slope = (73200-40964)/10 = 3223.6
intercept = ?
40,964 = 3223.6*3 + b
b = 31293.2
Equation: f(t) = 0.322.6n + 31293.2
---------------------------------------------------
The slope means the number of publishers increased by 3224 each year
after 1993
The n-intercept = (0,31293) means that in 1990 the number of
publishers was 31293 according to the model.
---------------------------------------------------
(a) find an equation of a linear model to describe the data. (b) what is the slope? what does it mean in this situation? (c) what is the n intercept? what does it mean in this situation?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Penelope has several coins, all nickels and quarters in her piggy bank. The total amount of money that she has is $15.65. If Penelope has 13 more nickels than quarters, how many quarters does she have?
-------------------
Quantity Eq:::: n = q + 13
Value Eq::::::: 5n + 25q = 1565 cents
----------------------------------------------
Substitute for n and solve for q:
5(q+13) + 25q = 1565
30q + 65 = 1565
30q = 1500
q = 50 (# of quarters)
