--------------------------------
Equation:
glucose + glucose = glucose
0.30x + 0.90(50-x) = 0.54*50
Multiply thru by 100 to get:
30x + 90*50 - 90x = 54*50
-60x = -36*50

x = (5/6)(36)
x = 30 fluid ounces (amt. of 30% solution needed for the mixture)

50-x = 20 fluid ounces (amt. of 90% solution needed for the mixture)

Length-and-distance/274698: Two ships leave port at the same time. One sails south at 15mph and the other sails east at 2o mph. Find a function that models the distance (D) between the ships in terms of the time (T) in hours elasped since thier departure.
I have solved in the followinf way and don't understand where I've gone wrong. I'm coming up with a different answer than what's in my textbook.
(By Pathagorean Therom)
D= 15(t) squared + 20(t) squared.
D(T) = 35(t) squared.
My textbook says that the answer is D(T) = 25T.
How are they getting this solution? Where am I going wrong? Please help! 1 solutions

Draw the picture.
East distance = 20t
South distance = 15t

Using Pythagoras:
D^2 = (20t)^2 + (15t)^2
---
D^2 = 400t^2 + 225t^2
---
D^2 = 625t^2
----
D = 25t

Random gain values: 5-x ; 2-x ; -x
Probabilities::::: 8/52 ; 13/52 ; 31/52

----
The log(base 10) of a number is the power of 10 required to express
the number.
For example log(base 10) of 10 = 1 because 10^1 = 10
log(base 10) of 100 = 2 because 10^2 = 100

Your Problem requires a calculator (which you can find online).

Exponential-and-logarithmic-functions/274430: how to solve each of these questions
a.) 2x=1/32
b.) 120x=25
c.) (4/9)^x= 81/16
thank you.......:)

Answer 200270 by stanbon(57277) on 2010-02-25 20:47:40 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!how to solve each of these questions
a.) 2x=1/32
Multiply both sides by (1/2)
x = (1/2)(1/32)
x = 1/64
--------------------------------
b.) 120x=25
Divide both sides by 120 to get:
x = 25/120
x = 5/24
----------------
c.) (4/9)^x= 81/16
Invert the left side:
(9/4)^-x = (9/4)^2
----
-x = 2
x = -2

Probability-and-statistics/274425: Your home's security system has a component which is 90% reliable with a back-up component that is 70% reliable. Assume that the reliabilities of the two components are independent. If someone burglarizes your home, what is the probability that
(a) both components fail?
(b) at least one component functions properly?

(b) at least one component functions properly?
P(at least one) = 1 - P(both fail) = 1-0.63 = 0.37

Linear-equations/274421: How do you interpret the slope and y-intercept in a real-world case? 1 solutions
Answer 200265 by stanbon(57277) on 2010-02-25 20:35:25 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!If "x" is the time when something happens,
the y-intercept tells you what happened
at the very beginning of the time period.
---
Ex: If A(t) = 3t + 10
where A(t) is the amount of money you have at time t,
then A(0) = 10 is the amount you started with.

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/274403: Let x be the number of miles driven on 60 gallons of gas. By setting up and solving a proportion involving x, find the value of x for the car that you have chosen. State the type of car, the mileage, and show both the set up of the proportion and the steps to solve. Include units with your answer.

In general:
x miles/60 gallons = (? miles /gallon)
---
Your car:
x miles/60 gallons = 22 miles/1 gallon

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/274402: Here's my problem...
The difference of the squares of two consecutive negative integers is 9. Find the integers.
Here's what I have so far...
-x and (-x+1)
-x^2 and (-x+1)^2
-x^2 - (-x+1)^2 = 9
-x^2 - (x + 1x + 1) = 9
-x^2 - x - 1x = 8
That's as far as I got and I'm not sure if that's correct.
Thanks again!!!

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Here's my problem...
The difference of the squares of two consecutive negative integers is 9. Find the integers.
---------------------
1st: x
2nd: x+1
--------------------
Equation:
(x+1)^2-x^2 = 9
x^2 + 2x + 1 - x^2 = 9
2x + 1 = 9
2x = 8
x = 4
x+1 = 5

Mixture_Word_Problems/274400: how many ounces of a 35% alcohol solution must be mixed with 17 ounces of a 40% alcohol solution to make 36% alcohol solution?
I just a formula to calculate this please! Thank you for ur help! 1 solutions

You can put this solution on YOUR website!how many ounces of a 35% alcohol solution must be mixed with 17 ounces of a 40% alcohol solution to make 36% alcohol solution?
-----------------
Equation:
alcohol + alcohol = alcohol
0.40*17 + 0.35x = 0.36(17+x)
-----
Multiply thru by 100 to get:
40*17 + 35x = 36*17 + 36x
x = 4*17
---
x = 68 ounces (amt. of 35% solution needed for the mixture)
