Linear-equations/334213: A student has earned scores of 87, 81, and 88 on the first 3 of 4 tests. If the student wants an average (arithmetic mean) of exactly 87, what score must she earn on the fourth test?

Think about how we take an average. We add up all of the numbers and divide by the number of numbers. The final average for our student will be the sum of all 4 test scores divided by 4. Let's say we want to achieve an overall average of for data elements given data elements.

We know that

So we can say that

But , the answer to the question, can be found by:

Which is to say:

So add up the scores for the tests already taken and subtract that sum from the product of the total number of tests multiplied by the desired overall average. Done.

Subset/334211: Suppose B is a proper subset of C If n(C) =8, what is the minimum number of elements of B?

The minimum number of elements in B is zero, because the null set is a proper subset of any set other than the null set.

Let's solve this one in general, that is for any given perimeter.

Let w represent the width of the field.

Let l represent the length of the field.

The perimeter of a rectangle is:

So

The area of a rectangle is the length times the width so a function for the area in terms of the width is:

Algebra Solution:

The area function is a parabola, opening downward, with vertex at:

Since the parabola opens downward, the vertex represents a maximum value of the area function. The value of the width that gives this maximum value is one-fourth of the available fencing. Therefore, the shape must be a square, and the area is the width squared.

Calculus Solution:

The area function is continuous and twice differentiable across its domain, therefore there will be a local extrema wherever the first derivative is equal to zero and that extreme point will be a maximum if the second derivative is negative.

Therefore the maximum area is obtained when

And the shape is therefore a square.

And that maximum area is:

First change

so that it is expressed in the same power of 10 that the other number is in.

So, reduce the exponent by 2, and move the decimal point two places right.

Now that the decimal points line up, you can just subtract the numbers:

But just subtracting two integers gives you the number of integers between them including one of the endpoints. Since you want to eliminate both endpoints, you need to subtract 1 more unit. Furthermore, you need to put the decimal point back where it belongs.

Hence:

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/334189: Eighty people are trapped in a ski lodge. They have enough food to last eight days. It takes five days to reach help (and five days for help to get back to the lodge). What is the fewest number of people to send for help (with sufficient food) so that those staying behind will be rescued before food runs out?

The trick to this one is to realize that the group of people who trek out to look for help will only need 5 days food (presumably there will be unlimited food for them once they get reach help in 5 days) while the group of people who remain at the lodge will need 10 days food, the 5 days it takes the other group to get out and the 5 days it takes the rescuers to return to the lodge.

If you consider one food unit to be sufficient food to feed one person for 1 day, then there must be 80 times 8 = 640 food units available.

Let represent the number of people who leave to get help. Then must be the number of people who remain at the lodge.

So

Just solve for

But you said you needed help solving an equation. What you described is not an equation. An equation is something that looks like {something} = {something else}. Notice the equals sign? That's where the word equation comes from. Since you don't have an equation or an inequality, you can't "solve" anything. Your expression can be simplified, but that's not what you asked.

" At the end of the year, a business has made a profit of $154,000. They must calculate the amount of tax due to the federal government and to the state. The federal tax rate is 30%, and the state tax rate is 10%. State taxes (ST) are deductible before federal taxes (FT) are calculated, and federal tax are deductible before states taxes are calculated. In other words, state taxes are subtracted from the profits before the 30% federal tax is calculated, and federal taxes are subtracted from the profits before the 10% state tax is calculated. 10% or 30 % of 154,000 does not require a system of equations to solve. Create and solve a system of equations to figure out how much state and federal taxes are owed by this company.

1. Identify the variables first. Do not confuse the tax rate with the amount of tax.
2. Set up a system of two equations. This is the only way that this problem can be solved.
3. Solve the system. Remember to report the answer in dollars."

Likewise, the other equation is set up like this:

This system of equations is set up perfectly to use the substitution method, so take the expression that is equal to in the first equation, and put it in place of in the second equation:

Your function is a polynomial, that is it is an expression of finite length constructed from variables and constants, using only the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and non-negative, whole-number exponents. Therefore the domain is the set of real numbers. Said another way, there are no real number values that can be substituted for for which is undefined.

You have not provided sufficient information. The pressure rating of your pump bears no relationship whatsoever to the pump's volume rate capacity. Is it a 60 gpm pump? 100 gpm? 120? What?

You say nothing about the shape or size of your tank -- nothing to give anyone a clue as to the actual volume of the tank as a function of the tank's height.

So, all I can tell you is that you need to determine the volume capacity of your pump in volume units per minute, and multiply that times 30 minutes. That will be the amount you can pump in 30 minutes.

Then you need to create a function that describes the volume of your tank as a function of its height. Set that function equal to the volume you calculated in the step above and then solve for the height that gives you that function value.

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/334089: 1. In this problem, we analyze the profit found for sales of decorative tiles. A demand equation (sometimes called a demand curve) shows how much money people would pay for a product depending on how much of that product is available on the open market. Often, the demand equation is found empirically (through experiment, or market research).
a. Suppose a market research company finds that at a price of p = $20, they would sell x = 42 tiles each month. If they lower the price to p = $10, then more people would purchase the tile, and they can expect to sell x = 52 tiles in a month’s time. Find the equation of the line for the demand equation. Write your answer in the form p = mx + b. Hint: Write an equation using two points in the form (x,p). 20=42x + b and 10= 52x +b
A company’s revenue is the amount of money that comes in from sales, before business costs are subtracted. For a single product, you can find the revenue by multiplying the quantity of the product sold, x, by the demand equation, p.
b. Substitute the result you found from part a. into the equation R = xp to find the revenue equation. Provide your answer in simplified form.
The costs of doing business for a company can be found by adding fixed costs, such as rent, insurance, and wages, and variable costs, which are the costs to purchase the product you are selling. The portion of the company’s fixed costs allotted to this product is $300, and the supplier’s cost for a set of tile is $6 each. Let x represent the number of tile sets.

c. If b represents a fixed cost, what value would represent b? $300
d. Find the cost equation for the tile. Write your answer in the form C = mx + b. C=6x + 300
The profit made from the sale of tiles is found by subtracting the costs from the revenue.
e. Find the Profit Equation by substituting your equations for R and C in the equation . Simplify the equation.

f. What is the profit made from selling 20 tile sets per month?
g. What is the profit made from selling 25 tile sets each month?
h. What is the profit made from selling no tile sets each month? Interpret your answer.
i. Use trial and error to find the quantity of tile sets per month that yields the highest profit.
j. How much profit would you earn from the number you found in part i?
k. What price would you sell the tile sets at to realize this profit? Hint: Use the demand equation from part a.
2. The break even values for a profit model are the values for which you earn $0 in profit. Use the equation you created in question one to solve P = 0, and find your break even values.
3. In 2002, Home Depot’s sales amounted to $58,200,000,000. In 2006, its sales were $90,800,000,000.

You can find the percent of growth in Home Depot’s sales from 2002 to 2006 by following these steps:
• Find the increase in sales from 2002 to 2006.
